I just got a American Standard Strat(2009) body off of the bay and am putting my old Strat neck on it. Anyway, I can see where the bridge ground was soldered into the trem claw (or whatever you call it) and that makes sense for grounding purposes. But what I don't get is that there is a piece of metal screwed into the wood at the bottom of the bridge pup cavity. And it obviously had wires soldered to it. What good would that do to just run the ground into solid wood? Maybe I am missing something, but it seems they would only do that if the cavity was shielded, right? Or am I missing something?

I see the Standard Strats have shielding, but no mention of that on the American Standards on the Fender site.

I appreciate any help. Thanks

The black paint is conductive shielding paint. So that explains the wood screw and the wire connection to the rest of the ground points.

This mystery rivals the pyramids. For years guys were shielding there guitars to kill the 60 cycle hum which everyone cant stand even the ones that lie and say they do. So first they try the lace sensor and now the noiseless pickup which I like. But why the hell for 40 years did they not shield them correctly in the factory when they new everyone was doing it when they bought one .How come they never came up with a quality shielding method. Still puzzles me.

I find that those shielding painted cavities work pretty good!

Better than the old vintage way (which wasn't shielded).

Hi straycat113: I've never had much of an issue with hum, with or without cavity shielding. I promise I'm not lying!

Mind you, the lighting I've had the honor of playing under occasionally was on something less than the Pink Floyd scale, but...

Cheers - C
