Lap steel guitars were the first instruments produced by the company founded by Leo Fender and Doc Kauffman in 1945. Following Kauffman’s departure in 1946, the company, K&F, was renamed Fender Electric Instrument Co.

actually, Leo was buried with the original strat. 53strat's is only a replica. it also is said the Pick of Destiny is wedged in the pickguard, the way Buddy Holly did his. of course, I dug it up and am working on using its awesome powers to rule the world!

this is all fiction, of course

O.O can you give me any info on that lap steel. A friend of mine has one near identical except the finger/slide board has roman numerals as possition markers. I've been trying to find info on it(not straining myself though) to no avail.

All I know about it is that it's a K&F steel (and I don't think it's a particularly early one either). Does your friend's say K&F on the headstock?

Theres no external markings anywhere its pretty beat up. Its the same guy with the woolworths top20 guitar i repaired a few months back. He got them both at the same time in the mid 70's from someones attic or garage.

I almost, ALMOST, hate to do this to you. But if you take all the tuners off that first Fender and look at the back of the headstock with tri-color polarized spectacles invented by Ben Franklin in the 1700s, you will see that my father's social security number is inscribed in invisible ink.

But I really DO thank you for finding my guitar. Please ship it back to me immediately. Please be sure to insure it for the 1 Billion dollars it is currently worth. I was planning on relic-ing the guitar when it was stolen and I'd like to get started.

It may be too late Platy... I'm sure Martian has modded it by now. Who needs those worn out old 250K pots and God forbid that he would leave those crappy old hand wound single coils in there when he could put in some new ones that don't make that silly 60mhz humm all the time.

Heck by the time he gets thru with it the guitar will probably look alot like one of his other's be hard to tell the difference.

OK...here goes. My family actually had the first tele.....in the neighborhood. It was a '48 Philco with a 10" screen. We junked it on the curb 50 years later when we acquired the first color tele, a '54 RCA which my Uncle Ben owned. (He made his fortune in converted rice during WWII). But I digress.....so we found out that you scavenged the Tele off the street and that's how you came to have the first Tele...which you really didn't have the first Tele of.....even though you let people think you did. :?

Now everybody knows the rest of the story 8)
