Frantic if you take english prices and double them you get AU/NZ prices. Fr'instance a CS artist Clapstrat is around the £1800 mark here a masterbuilt around £3K. Pretty much $ for £ the same prices as you pay despite the £ being worth a good bit more than the $. Thats because of import taxes and customs and excise duty. Now AU and NZ both have the same taxation and customs levies but also suffer a $ thats worth roughly half a $ and 2/3s - 4/5's of a US $.
Also American instruments are a good deal rarer than they are in either the UK or USA. Their close proximity to asia makes Japanese Fender (and luckily Tokai) far more popular and affordable.

I think Vin should just build us our guitars now. You'd find all sorts of things in em. Shiney coins, beatles prints, Virgin Mary apparitions, maybe even the odd picture of me cross dressing. .

It would certainly make a far more interesting guitar buying experience for everyone.

Frantic even when you try and fly out buy a guitar and bring it back they charge you import and customs duty. They got very wise to that some time back. It currently runs at around 40% of the cost of the instrument and shipping. I know, i tried to do it and consequntly have a AM std/series still impounded by HMIRC from six years ago." Ah mr Nik you flew out with a £90 encore strat and seem to have returned with a fender." me, "yes it was a gift from friends over there. They saw the rubbish encore and made me accept this guitar". Customs inspector, "we dont care about that, and dont believe it was a gift. its liable for taxation £200 now or it gets impounded and charged storage at £10 a week".

Vinny I'm very good mate and contemplating a run, shower then off to the fish market to hunt my tea. I've a lot of family round Port Norlunga, when they want fish they just go and catch it. Reckon the sea is teeming with the stuff.

I got lucky with mine, I took it thru customs and they never asked a thing. I think it must be the open boarders between NZ and AU , though im not 100% certain where immune to it.

Fishing down our area is brilliant niki- I couldn't belive the price of fish (mind the pun) when I was in London- it was crazy

Thats $600NZ, and $30 per week.

A McDonalds combo I got in London cost me 6 pounds, and I was thinking "Man thats $18 Bucks!!... Crap." Same thing here is NZ $7.

Just wanted to concur about the Australian prices... there are bargains to be had, but mostly items work out to be at least half again the U.S. price. Close to double the dollar amount; i.e. a guitar costing US $1500 would have a marked price of at least AUD $3000. I paid AUD $3300 for my CS guitar (secondhand), and the new retail price for the same one here is now $6200. Crazy. I'm sure it would be possible to beat the salespeople down - especially in this economic climate - but still... you'd be looking at spending at least $5000. That's the current Aussie retail on an E.J. Strat (!)

That money would get you a decent Dan Smith-era Strat, or a late '70s one from a dealer. For what it's worth, I think vinnypop did pretty well. Necks from that period usually go for around $800, but the Anniversary ones are more expensive owing to the four-bolt construction. You'd have to go back to '71 for another four-bolt '70s neck. I've seen people trying to flog '70s necks on MIJ bodies for up to $3000 (not sure how much success they've had, mind), so $2000 all up is fairly good by our standards. I don't think it's much of an exaggeration on vinnypop's part to say it's worth $4000. You wouldn't be able to sell it for that much right now, but that's because everyone's looking for forced-sale bargains.

Anyway, that's all beside the point. The point is: vinnypop goes off like a frog in a sock!

Thanks mondo how are you buddy. Niki thats a sad story my bro told me that people are now buying the loaded strat bodies from the states as they can be placed in a box and posted without it being charged as much or any tax is this true, its only when they see the whole guitar the tax man jumps on it.
