Shame you missed out on the neck, vinnypop, that would have been a good price. I don't usually have much luck with hotly-contested items... I do make a habit of looking for ones with poorly chosen keywords, such as "echo" instead of "delay" -- things go better if you're the only bidder!

I found a tasteful picture of my ultra to whet Blertles' appetite:

...shame it's away at the shop for the next few weeks due to a backlog of Plek orders. The frets were crying out for a dressing, and I don't trust myself to carry out that sort of procedure. I'm sure it'll benefit from a bit of an overhaul, anyway, as it's not had much done to it in the past 18 years.

oy, mondo, is that your ultra? or is that a Plus Deluxe neck, Beck Pickquard assembly, and a nice flamed SB body? just curious.

if it is a beck, nice ax. was not aware it was made a s a sunburst. thought it was only offered in surf green, graffiti yellow, and pewter.

ummm... yes, that is indeed an unadulterated ultra, nothing done to it in the 18 years I've owned it... heh. I can't remember how those late '80s/early '90s Beck models differed from the ultras (wouldn't be too hard to find out, but don't have time right now), but they did have the same dual pickups and switching arrangement, and they usually turn up in surf green as you say. Lovely guitars, those, and I'd be particularly interested in a graffiti yellow one.

As far as I know, all ultras had a figured maple top -- curly one-piece if you were lucky! -- and thus the finishes were all 'bursts/"firestorms" of varying degrees of transparency. Mine is a common-or-garden variety ultra.

The fretboards were always ebony, and as far as I know that was the first of the Fender line to have that feature. At the time of purchase I was particularly pleased to find a Strat with an ebony board, as I was mainly playing flamenco then and liked the association with my nylon-string. Since then I've gravitated more toward maple for an electric guitar, but really I'm not fussy.

The weird thing is, almost nobody in Australia has any idea that Fender produced these as their flagship guitar for such a long period (well... I guess the traditional Strat is the true flagship, but you know what I mean... their top-of-the-production-line model), so they seem to be regarded with some suspicion, as if they're a snazzy-looking knock-off.

Cute dog twelvebar, I'm not tough at all, my hearts bigger than my brain. Did you hear some scientists have now found brain neurones in heart cells which explains why a lot of heart recipients take on characteristics of the previous donor very interesting indeed.

Hi vinnypop... I'm definitely not an expert regarding Fender-Lace Sensors, I just have them on my guitar. They're passive pickups, so not battery powered. They use barium-ferrite magnets rather than aluminium-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) and they're mostly noise-free. The magnets don't pull on the strings as much as a regular pickup, so they sound best when they're as close to the strings as possible without having the strings buzz against them.

They come in different "colours"... the writing on the pickup cover (blue, gold or red on an ultra) denotes the flavour of the pickup -- whether it's meant to produce a sound similar to the usual neck, middle or bridge pickups.

The ultra series has a little 3-position toggle switch that allows the player to select between either of the two red sensors in the bridge position, or both in series for a humbucker sound. Either of the two can be used with the neck or middle pickups as well, so there are plenty of options on top of the usual Strat offerings. It'll reproduce traditional Strat tones pretty well, I think -- you'd have to be very fussy to find fault -- but I like it best when it's used for its ultra-ness!

The second tone control is also a little different, and very useful. Set to 5 it's more or less the same as a regular Strat knob on 10... but between 5 and 10 it cuts the middle and bass frequencies, leaving the treble. It really cuts through if you're using the dual sensors in series and you need a little more definition in that humbucker sound. It's not an active treble boost, it just cuts the bass in one direction, treble in the other (like a regular tone knob).

Hm. I hope some of that made sense! In truth I've played my other Strat much more lately, but I'm expecting to get back into the ultra in a big way once it's back from the shop.

I have a Strat Plus with a single red in the bridge. At the time, I just didn't have enough cash for an Ultra (You have a freaking beautiful guitar by the way). But I LOVE the silver middle pickup. I even installed one in my Ibanez paired with a Dimarzio Steve's Special in the bridge and Tone Zone in the neck.

I've tried a lot of different pickups in the middle of my Ibanez, but the Lace Silver ended up being my pickup of choice. It really sings nicely. I had a SD Duckbucker in the middle about a week ago, but the Lace was a much better fit to my ears.

I can't say that the single red by itself is my favorite sound in my Plus, but I always use it paired with the silver, and I love that sound. The Silver and Blue are still my favorite Laces.

Thats my Sammoyed, Tuzer (irish name) Towser (english).
I can stay mad at him, your joking. Russ yeah i do have plenty of guitars to enjoy, its not the point. I had decided to reward my non smoking by spending the money i'd save from not buying cigs on a new guitar at the end of a year or 18months. Roughly £2600 a year, I wanted a masterbuilt 57 so your looking at £3.5k. Well I've been quit 5weeks and spent £1800 of that money because of him. I always considered myself a dog lover, even worked for a basset hound rescue once. All thats changed now. I can honestly say my empathy towards dogs is long gone. This all happened friday. When i get mad its usually go to sleep and its all back to normal in the morning. This hasnt abated though.

Hey Vin If your gonna pick then flick, dont chew.

hahaha Classic.

Shredd I'm much the same. Our cat (winston) is a real effeminate kind of nancy boy, or so i thought. After studying him, he seems to be the local hardman of the cat world. My interest got piqued with him when the postman knocked the door, said, 'is this your cat mate?'. There was winston lying on the doorstep covered in black ooze. I though he's been hit by a car. Rushed him down the vets who washed him off. The black ooze was running off him red (deep blood), there wasnt a scratch on the cat. He'd been through the middle of something. Most mornings theres a selection of mice that come down off the fields. All neatly arranged for our viewing pleasure. I've re-titled him .The terror that stalks at night'.

Heh... I had a cat come in with what I thought was a baby snake one time. He had a hold of the snake just behind its head, and it was thrashing around in a thoroughly annoyed manner. I got the cat to drop it, and somehow hustled it outside while scolding the cat.

I had to go to university that day, so I left the snake under an upside-down bucket with a brick on top and a sign saying "Caution: snake". I called the local wildlife rescue service so they could come around and collect it.

When they came over a few hours later, they encountered what turned out to be a fully grown brown snake who'd been pinned by the tail under a hot bucket for half the day, and was mad as a... as an angry one-of-the-most-lethal-snakes-in-a-country-known-for-having-the-world's-most-venomous-snakes can be. It was only about a foot long... I didn't know that the adults were that small.

Gday shredd6 funny how cats just turn up at the door soemtimes I think they are more intelligent than humans thats why the Egyptians worshipped them. Love the face of that Sammoy and the cat poor bird. I dint record today 3 songs in 7 days was more than I can handle. I like your stories too guys your opening up more now excellent. Just saw John Travolta in Sat Night Swine Flu hahahahahah 1977 makes me sick looking at it and how on earth I was involved in that bloody disco scene and fashion style. The seventies would have to rank as the greatest disaster of clothing fashion ever perpetrated on humanity. I rank the sixties as the greatest and best in clothing fashions. Eighties were nearly as bad as the seventies ninties we start growing a brain and now in 21st century I think its the neo grunge dont give a xxxxxxxxx look which suits me fine as I dont care what I look like. But Mrs Vinny Pop dresses me like a punce every morning like a little barbie doll.

I am still but a rookie and could probably do it.....I have 3 webcams(PC,Laptop,PS3) should I give it a go or should you seasoned vets give it a go?

I will now do something cosmic and very spiritual and show you an Epiphany that means a moment situation where a person sees God or feels God senses something here we go this is a great story.

In 2000 while my wife was fighting for her life with cancer I was in the park hitting dogs on the head with a stick for fun hahahahah no I wasnt its a joke ok seriously I was trying to relax fish with parents. 2 very tall blonde beauties came up to me looking like Bond girls. '' Caught anything they asked'' ''no to windy'' '' Youre here with parents thats all that matters''
they left, immediately I pull line in real heavy, I reeled in a fishing rod jarvis Walker a top brand with real covered in barnacles like at least a year in water, dad took it home cleaned it up. Next day was in the park again and saw a young man and his pregnant wife living under a bush. Were not there the previous day never saw them before either. His name was John comes up to me asks if I caught anything, I said no mate. I felt sorry for him homeless with preggy wife. Told me his story pain and misery homeless. Then he said a year ago was here thats when I began to lose hope and I was fishing he said and I through my whole rod in. I asked him to describe it ... '' a jarvis walker '' I told him I caught it yesterday and dad cleaned it up. His eyes opened up real big and mine tooooo. I started to feel the ephiphany hitting both of us. I said ill give it back and he said no keep it. I went upstairs came out gave him and wife some change and food. The following day he was under bush with wife, he approached me smiling and said Vince these reporters came this morning and put me in the papers and now the Government has rushed us into a housing commission flat. But the way he told me and hugged me was as if the moment of ephinany marked the beginning of his new life and change of luck. Ephinanyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
