Gday Blerties and Niki. Mrs Vinny Pop is a classic woman, strong willed tough and also soft too good for me. Well guys and gals if we launch Vinny Pop merchandise world wide we already have the company and executive committee here hahahahhahaha wouldnt that be grand, then we could all buy a strat like orville a real 54 and jam together, 2 hour lunches and a nice big round table to decide what merchandise we can Vinny Poperise.

Okay, so who's going to whip up some music to go with all of those words? Anybody got a Mellotron?

Mellotron???

Yeah, I was thinking we'd need that to really get Beatles vibe going: the flutes not strings.

I preface this by saying I have only been playing for a little over a year and I have tried to strum my strat with a pick and does not sound great but when i strum with my fingers it's magical....is there any reason or am I doing something wrong with the pick...I'm tryin ta get this bloody Vinnypop melody down.............Vinnypop's his strat by the early mornin light.......................

Trauma
I only use a plectrum for punk or metal everything else is played with fingers. The brash strum is a primary reason for that. What i found with plectrums is that you need to be very soft, only hit the strings with the very tip of the plectrum. Also avoid strumming further towards the headstock helps too if playing with a plectrum.

Being fairly new to it all why not try and mix both fingers and plectrum. I did that a lot when i first started, as i got into playing metal i dropped the fingerpicking. A big mistake, as i got older my tastes changed and lastyear i decided to force myself to fingerpick. It hasnt been easy but i'm getting there with it. I wish i'd never left it by the wayside.

Thanks Ninja.....for some odd reason I am favoring the frets with the position markers  it's becoming a bad habit...have u heard of this nasty affliction?. As far as plectum or no plectum I am trying to go without it and it seems a little easier...but.....there's this position marker affliction thingy.......finger rehab?

The easy thing to do with the possition marker addiction is play along with songs that are in funny keys. Eb and Bb. Basicaly positions that dont have a marker immediately available on the bass strings. YOur safe with Bb & Eb till you get to the G and B strings. F works as does G#.
Most chuck berry stuff is Bb keyed and everyone knows you cant beat a bit of chuck B.
Another way would be to detune your guitar half a tone and play along with all your regular A,E,D,G keyed songs. Basicaly go out of your way to play in in unmarked positions. I shouldnt worry too much, your new to guitar. I believe you have some kind of subconcious (and false) feeling of safety by playing on the markers. Its not that uncommon, all you have to do is be hard on yourself. Also try substituting major scales for major pentatonic and melodic minor for minor pentatonic. You'll find all the major/minor pentatonic notes in those scales but will have to change from your regular positioning.
Being hard on yourself is the only way you'll progress significantly. The rewards are great though.

Mornin all hope your well Trauma playing with fingers is a good thing many greats play with fingers and some say it also makes you feel closer one with the guitar as you are co joined not separated by a piece of plastic. I find playing with fingers good for more controlled rythm playing and you feel more comfortable becuse sometimes I worry about dropping the pic . But for lead guitar work I need a pic to get the bite sound out as finger lead playing can dampen the sound use a blend of both you may be a gifted fibger player plucker keep both styles if you can master both your blessed.

Vinnypop,
Don't know to much about microphones but in my limited experience with them, Shure mics seem to be a good buy.
http://www.shure.com/index.htm
Here's their web address. They've got lots of options. My buddy has a couple of Shure mics that seem pretty solid but I don't know the models. I'll try to remember to ask him next time I see him.

I'm curious about your 1st album. What style of music would you say the album is? I think I might have to check it out.

Russ
