If you need some lubricant, why not graphite? Blow some lock lube in a tube in that hole. If it picks up any grease or oil, it will just make slippery gunk and not jam up the works or soften the wood.

I did some more digging and it would seem that a product called Tri-Flow is really good for lubing machines. Evidently it is a Teflon lube suspended in a liquid that can be sprayed into the machine... then the liquid "carrier" evaporates and you're left with a nice Teflon coating on you gears!

Has anyone used this product?

Sounds good, just be careful. You don't dare want to get any teflon based stuff on your guitar's finish.

I have a 25 year old Ovation..........and the tuners are just fine with no lubrication.
