Hey stratsters, not liking the idea of the "road worn" series
I came across this video on youtube, and thought it looked pretty awesome,
a copy of one of the strats hendrix burned and gave to frank zappa who gave it to dweezil who restored it.

I just bought a american standard strat body off ebay, so gonna burn this baby up with lighter fluid, anyone in the know have any tips? For example
do I oil the body in the areas that the paint comes off completely so it doesnt dry out and crack?

Cheers

He did an okay job on the guitar, but the guy's Hendrix story is all wrong.
Hendrix burned the guitar at the Miami Pop Festival not the Fillmore. Fire Marshall's and evidence had nothing to do with it. Hendrix's tech gave the guitar to Zappa, not Hendrix himself. Zappa modified it with a Performance neck sized to the specs of the SG.

This info came from several Guitar Player interviews with Zappa.
The guy on youtube has a good story, but a lot of it's myth. Frank did give the guitar to Dweezel who did his own thing to it.

Yeah I thought it looked pretty cool, I dont want all the paint burnt off so I guess it's gonna have to be kinda controlled. 63supro, yeah the guy kind got it all wrong, it was clarified in an old comment on the youtube page:

Quote:
Frank Zappa told Guitar-Player magazine in '77 that he had the Strat that Jimi Hendrix burned in Miami. Problem is that Jimi NEVER burned a guitar in Miami, and ONLY did it on 3/31/67 @ Finsbury Park Astoria, London (opening of the Walker Brother Tour w/Engelbert Humperdinck & Cat Stevens); And of course on 6/18/67 @ Monterey. Jimi's Miami 5/18/68 Show is WELL-DOCUMENTED & FILMED by ABC TV. He did NOT burn a Strat there. It is well-known that, historically at least, Zappa has his facts wrong...

Have to see how it goes, apparently SRV and Rory Gallagher treated their bodies with something i remember reading somewhere.

Cheers

All my Zappa articles call it the "Miami Strat" up until 2006. You would think Zappa himself would know the history behind the guitar. Zappa clarified that it was not the Monterey Strat but the Miami Strat. Unless a person was personally there at the time, I'd have to go with Zappa's' story.

There's a lot of different stories floating around. Some people said it was burned during the afternoon show in Miami. Some thought it came from Jimi's '67 Finsbury Park show. All I know is it wasn't burned at the Fillmore East or West.

If i were you i would burn something in nitro

the guitar i burned was poly, i'd be very interested to see your results,
because im sure they'd be quite different than mine.

good luck!

Hey thanks for the link jag_man, I haven't found much googling, but found plenty of relicing websites that dont give away much, my body is a 2005 Fender Standard Stratocaster, so i guess that's nitrocellulose, might be better to use a propane torch, I wanna be able to play the thing afterwards, that blue strat body looks like a gonner

I don't know. With fire there are so many uncontrolled factors, this could really backfire. And I think the model you have should be poly finish unless it's some kind of special edition or something.

I think relicing's beauty is all in the eye of the beholder, but with normal relicing you have more control over the tools you use.
