It is just terminology from the 70s to late 80s MIJ stood for made in Japan. From the late 80s on they changed it to CIJ which stands for Crafted in Japan.But they are exactly the same thing just time periods.

You might be a little wrong.
Mine is a 95/96 model (bought November 97') and it clearly says MADE IN JAPAN
