DAMN! pardon my French, but that thing is as F**king fake as they come.

though the seller clearly states that it was Custom Made and not a real fender.

A REAL Voodoo Stratocaster looks like THIS, and goes for about TRIPLE of what that one is:

Whoever put the Fender decal on has it on backwards. I would stay away from this at all costs. $650=too good to be true. Use the close-up on the pic.

For an authentic Voodoo Strat you should be paying anywhere from $1400 to $1800 these days, depending on the condition.

They came in Black, Olympic White, and a Tobacco Sunburst, available with either maple or rosewood necks; (all came stock with white 3 ply pickguards but that's modifiable so still look for other stuff). Look for the headstock to be reverse but the decal to be upright. The Hendrix portrait should be engraved in the neckplate, the bridge pickup should be reverse tilted, and the guitar should be a TN7XXXXX serial number.

A lot of people on ebay and such use the "Voodoo" term loosely to describe any guitar with a reverse headstock, whether custom built or from Fender, but the above description is how to tell a real deal '97 Fender Voodoo Strat from the rest.

Also, there were recently a smaller run of Mexican-made 60's Reverse Headstock strats made. You can differentiate these because they only came in black or white, never sunburst, and only came with maple necks; they have a skunk stripe down the back of the neck as well as cream knobs and pickup covers, and if I'm not mistaken they only have a 1 ply pickguard. I believe they have a 7.25' fretboard radius with vintage frets as well, unlike the Voodoo strat's 9.5" radius and medium jumbo frets. The serial number wouldn't read TN7XXXXX either. These are cool strats themselves, and very decently priced, but the old MIA Voodoo Strats are a different beast in my opinion.

Good luck, hope you find yourself a nice Voodoo strat. They're my favorite.

I don't think this is the Voodoo Strat. It looks like a 68 Reverse Headstock Strat which sold for about $650.00 before the price hike. I should know. I had one.

That one is a Voodoo because the 60's Reverse never came in Sunburst.

I thought the Voodoo Strat was another name for the Hendrix Tribute Strat. The entire guitar was upside down. So then Fender must have produced three distinct guitars:

1. The 68 Reverse Headstock
2. The Jimi Hendrix Tribute
3. The Voodoo

Yep, the Voodoo Strat is a separate model from the Tribute strat. The Tribute strat is a left handed guitar strung right handed. The Voodoo Strat is a right handed body, reverse headstock. There are many more models. There is also a 2001 '68 Re-Issue Reverse Headstock strat which I also own, which is exactly like the Voodoo Strat, just made after the Hendrix family legal problems, so it lacks Hendrix's name attached, or his face on the neck plate, but still has a TN7 serial number.

So in terms of wacky reverse headstock strats since '97 you have:

'97 Tribute- Left handed guitar strung right handed
'97 Voodoo Strat- Right handed guitar, reverse headstock
2001- '68 Re-issue Reverse Headstock Strat, exact same strat as Voodoo strat
and then

The 2006 or 2007 60's Reverse Headstock strat, which is MIM and has all the differences I posted earlier.

You can read more about it all here: http://www.modernguitars.com/archives/000039.html

then, of course, there is the legendary '80 Prototype Strat (proud owner of one of the '04 reissues)

I don't consider it in the same category as Hendrix-related strats, though most people do.

a picture, for those who don't know:

Yeah I left that one out for the sake of clarity. A bit different than the rest, but nonetheless a recreation of the 1980 prototype that paved the way for allllll of these reverse headstock strats.

I noticed that Squier has started making a strat that is similar to the proto strat:
