Mick Mars? Man, I grew up in the 80's listening to everything guitar. I read every guitar mag that came out. Mick was consistently considered one of the worse guitarist of the time, him and CC Deville of Poison. The times had really raised the bar for guitar playing back then, and those guys were not getting it.

Ironic thing is, that by todays standards, he is way above the bell curve, that is how far things have fallen. Thanks Kurt Cobain. Yes, he changed Rock music by being overly simplistic and killing any musicians that were actually students of the guitar. It had to happen though, things had gone too far.

MC was a glam band, and as a metal head, I hated glam. Though I did like the first two MC albums. I mostly liked classic rock and thrash like Metallica, Megadeth, Testament and Slayer. Now, as I get older I am starting to appreciate more, and some of the glam bands did have good music.

But, I still can't see giving a guy that won multiple worse guitarist awards during his hayday a sig series fender guitar. Maybe a sig BC Rich though

Im sure the guys a great guitarist, but I really cant support a signature strat for guys that wore costumes and piled on the eye shadow.

IMO...MC didnt contribute much, or enough, to the evolution of music and guitar work. MC was more about stage antics and fantacy.

Hhehe..I agree. I wonder if many people here remember the countless awards Mick Mars got for being the worst player. These were from various Guitar oriented Magazines back in the 80s and early part of the 90s. I'll scan an old 80s guitar world magazine showing this when I go through my collection. I think people are confusing between the player and the band he plays in. Motley Crue as band was good, specially the very early 80s Motley Crue, but Mick Mars as a player, he is pretty mediocre compared to other guitar players from his time, Eddie, Yngyview, Randy, Jake, George, Dough and so on from the 80s.

True Mars maybe a pentatonic player along with Slash, but Slash has contributed more into guitar playing as he has re-popularized the Les Paul in the late 80s when everyone else back then was playing their Jackson Soloist, Kramer Barrettas, and Randy Rhoads Jackson V. Slash also has a very distint tone and style that easily identify him. I don't see non of that with Mick Mars.

On the same note, Gary Moore is also a very pentatonic player, and I think Mick Mars is not in the same league as him. So again, I think Gary Moore is due for a Strat sig. Just listen to that fat screaming tone on Victims of the Future album. That is a tortured 61 fiesta red strat plugged straight to a Marshall.

Mick got those awards because if you weren't playing 128th note runs you weren't a real guitar player. That would cross 99% of this board of their list, I imagine. Feeling didn't come into play until after Kurt Kablam did the world a favor in the 90's. If you like MC's tunes, you can't not like mick. There was no other guitarist backing him up like all the shred bands. or even GnR. Mick wrote the music to those songs. Nikki wrote the lyrics and barely could play in time with Tommy. Vince did his thing, but as far as the sound of MC, that was all Mars. There sure is a lot of revisionist history being rewritten in this thread. Mick was called a slow player. CC was called a poser. Go listen to CC today. He's a good guitarist too when he's not writing for the song.

Ok lets compare Mick Mars with the slower pentatonic players, Slash, Clapton, Beck, Page, Winter, Hendrix, Moore when playing blues, Travers, Vaughn, Moreno, and Peter Green. So pick one from the list and put Mars in comparison. You think Mars will stand out?

Interestingly, enough Slash has won awards and he does not play 128th note runs.

You mention Mars and CC alot. So I assume you like the 80s pop metal or glam metal scene of the 80s. Nothing wrong with that as I was there. I saw Motley Crue before they were signed playing at the Whiskey back in 81 and saw Posion before CC was the guitarist for the band at the Country Club in Reseda back in 84.

Dude, they ditched the makeup after their debut EP. As for costumes, leather is somewhat less a costume than feather plumes. What you did was post an incorrect stereotype. BTW, Crue is still on the billboard, still touring, still selling sh@tloads of tickets and merch, and still rocking people's face 28 years after their national debut. Where are the bands you speak of? Oh yeah, they're the graveyard shift at the classic rock stations. Keep trying to prove that you aren't a hypocrite, BigJay dude!

Rock on, brother!!

Not at all. Somebody asked for facts, and sometimes the truth stings a little. I can only imagine what would happen if that spew about Qiuet Riot got made into a thread title. Why, Lumping the immortal Randy Rhoads into this pissing match by calling him a gimmicky player? Wow. Just wow!
