I don't have a dog in this fight as I backed out a looong time ago, but since it is where it is now...

The 1959 Jazzmasters had a larger headstock, but it was still pretty significantly different from the CBS era ones. The round tip was a lot more circular and the bottom curve was more of a double opposing "s" radii look. Very pronounced transition from the round tip to the bottom curve too.

You can actually see a marked change between these
1963 pre-CBS: http://elderly.com//vintage/items/30U-15560.htm
1965: http://elderly.com//vintage/items/30U-14959.htm
CBS bought Fender in early 65, but that neck is early too. Sketchy details on whether CBS had any controlling interest prior or not, but still a difference in those either way.

On the other hand, the CBS era headstocks had a more fluid transition from the tip to the curve and a single radius on the bottom clef curve.

Yours does not look exactly like either, but if I had to pick one it would be the CBS Strat.

I'll leave it there and head back to the sidelines again now. No matter what, just like everything else in the world, it is worth exactly what someone will pay for it and no more. I just implore you to be as completely honest without any embellishment in your description as possible. Ebay is already a crap shoot as it is. Don't cause someone else to go through the same string of emotions you state you went through when you bought it due to a questionable description.

Best of luck in any case.

I research every guitar I own and have now found out the headstock may be a copy of a 59 jazzmaster and the logo is a copy of a 62 Jazzmaster and that these guitars were around in 67 and earlier so I am cruising nicely on Lonely Boy. No twelvebar the only markings written and stamped in the body are 61 which matches the age of the wood and metal patina perfectly so thats how this guitar is being sold on ebay. Theres not much else to add now and I doubt anyone can add anything else to my baby Lonely Boy. But I will now readd the vet who contacted me and write his evidence that these guitars were around 1967. People need to know everything just as I do. Hopefully Ill score 2k for it soon enough enough money for another 5 partscasters blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and twaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I'm too paranoid to ever buy a guitar off eBay. If I haven't held it in my hands, checked it out for fret buzz and whatnot, and then played Smoke On The Water on it, then I'm not buying it!

Well Blertles, you could always buy Lonely Boy from Vinnie. You could tell the chicks you have a famous and controversial guitar, and we could all move on to something else! :D

Ive worked it all out myself with the assistance of provide.net
The logo '' Fender '' on Lonely Boy was only used from 62 - 68. Fender started using large headstocks in 1965 not in the seventies as many were telling me here. The curved stratocaster name is a copy of the Jazzmaster style of writing which was also used on authentic jazzmasters from 62 - 68 and the vibrato is a jazzmaster derivative, so Lonely Boy is dated between 62 and 68 and it is impossible to get the exact year. And will now reword the add again to read 62 - 68 vintage

I'm pretty sure that the larger headstocks from the 60's were slightly different than the ones from the 70's. The "fin" part under the logo was curved differently (please don't ask me where I read that, but I swear I've read it in a guitar book somewhere). They do look the same at first glance, but are different on closer inspection.

By the way, Vinny - Lonely Boy Jnr. is doing well. I've had the guitar a week today, and have only put it down to go to work!

Hi vinny: I'm going to have one little attempt at this myself.

We've chatted on several threads: you know that I'm a friendly guy who's not looking to make a fool of anyone or have an argument. I'm not on anyone's side, I just want to help you on the dating of this guitar. So.

Here's your picture of Lonely Boy's headstock:

Image

It says STRATOCASTER in thick black curving letters. That type of lettering only began on Strats in 1968. Therefore, neither a real Strat nor a fake can be from before that date.

There's a nice photo of '60s guitars on page 133 of The Stratocaster Chronicles book that helps support that. Online, these pictures will help. Here is a 1967 Strat headstock:

Image

And here's a 1968 one:

Image

Those pictures can be found from this useful webpage:

http://www.stratcollector.com/scn/base.html

Because Fender did not use that STRATOCASTER lettering before 1968 it is impossible for an imitation guitar to antedate that year either.

Reasonable?

Cheers - C

I don't know why they stopped putting on those vintage tuners as standard issue. I've always liked them.

Hello Ceri, theres one problem with that which you over look, the gold Fender logo that is used came out in 62 - 68. So I have anyway dated my add to read 62 -68 in the description as well as stating the markings inside the body which covers all possibilities. I cannot neglect the markings inside the body they have to be revealed and stated, the guitar body and neck may very well be made in 61 stored for several years and released in 1968. Or it was released in 62 as per the serial numbers (3) and the word stratocaster was copied from the style of writing from the Jazzmaster 62 - 68 which was also curved and came out before the strat started curving. I am happy now stating and mentioning 62 -68.
