If so...elaborate.

A little bit, but my ESP covers that genre so much better.

To me the strat excels on clean to classic rock type tones

Agreed, but i have a Strat with a EMG 85 so yeah it does a pretty good job.

I also use a Jackson RR3 for my second guitar, I am not sure wich one I like better as of right now.

They both sound awsome, they are just two different types of guitars.

All it takes is a hot low noise pickup to be able to do it, but I also get the feeling that the saddles are not great for metal, they seem to add a twang to the sound that does not sound good under high gain to me. I am sure that signature series is designed to eliminate the twang. When I was watching Iron Maiden on VH1 classic lately, they seem to be using locking nuts and floyds or a differnet bridge than what is on a AM STD like I use. The strat is capable of being a great metal guitar, it is just that the AM STD SSS is not set up for that. I love my strat though

I use my Highway 1 Stratocaster for Metal. It has SSS configuration. I could get more of a Metal tone with a HSS config, but it does just fine like it is. Plus I also play Rock and Blues on it as well. Very versatile. Still debating puting on EMG 85's, maybe Dimarzio SD 100, Seymour Duncan SH-8, or maybe I'll keep it with stock pups, I just have not decided yet.

Of course I use an array of pedals and a good amp to help me achieve my sound as well, and my stock pups are pretty good.

I can, though it might be my first choice. I have a JR Jr single-sized on the bridge and two lace sensors. No noise, great tone, tons of great gain though my mesa boogie.

So I can definitely play some heavy stuff on it. For actual metal, I have a custom peavey that about 17 yrs old, dimarzio pro paf, 24 frets, kahler floating trem, all that. I can get crazier on that one and do the whole trem bar goofiness with that.

I use a Gibby LP for hard stuff. I like lower output pups in my MIA strat SSS. Even in the 4 position, It has problems with the crunch. I dont doubt that you can throw a hot humbucker in a HSS, but I prefer a tune-o-matic bridge for the heavy stuff.

I just picked up a Fender Deluxe Fat Strat HSS. It came stock with 2 Tex-Mex single coil and a Tex-Mex humbucker. I hated the sound of the humbucker so I dropped a DiMarzio super distortion in it. Man what a difference. This guitar sounds heaver than my Gibson Explorer. I still kept the 2 Tex-Mex single coils in it for a nice light sound when I want it. I know Dave Murry uses the Super Distortion in the bridge along with a PAF at the neck. If you do order a new humbucker just remember to get the F-Spaced. I made that mistake.
