Let's see . . . you come on a Fender forum and ask if you should buy a Strat or an LP Studio. I'd wager that the answer you'll get is "Strat".

I'll come at it from a little different angle. I owned an LP before a Strat as I assumed all of my "guitar heroes" played LPs. Played the LP for a year before even checking out a Strat. When I did pick up the Strat, however, I knew I found the guitar for ME. The Strat is much lighter and seems to "fit" me better. Ergonomically it's just a better, more comfortable guitar for ME. I also find it to be the more versatile instrument. I sold me LP to help finance my Strat and I've never regretted it.

If I ever win the lottery or come into a bunch of money that isn't already promised out to other bills I'd like to buy a nice Ice Tea LP Standard, just to round out my electric guitar collection. However, if I can only have one electric it is/would be my Strat.

Let us know what you decide.

The Les Paul is a very one-dimensional instrument. It's what you call a one-trick pony. It knows how to do one thing extremely well. But don't ask it to do anything else.

Les Pauls are noted for their thick, sustaining tone. That is their claim to fame. They do that well. But if you try something like sweep picking on them forget it. Your notes turn to mush. Lots of what you play gets lost because of the thickness and distortion.

If you turn down the volume on a Les Paul the sound doesn't clean up very well either. It's just soft. But still dirty.

The Strat is the ultimate instrument. It's versatile. It can cover any style of music. You can get numerous sounds from it. It's not a one-trick pony at all.

If you want a one-dimensional sound get a Gibson. If you want versatility and an instrument that articulates extremely well get a Strat.
This +1..Strat ar far more versatile than there Gibson competitor and in IMHO ..Can't be beat..Buy Starts or get lost in the mix

But there not competitors. Gibson SG and LP's are totaly different guitars and with a pedal board in front of you there is nothing one dimesional about any guitar today. Zakk Wylde, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Townshend , Slash, Duane Allman, Peter Green, Bob Marley all seemed to do very well with Gibsons.

I just don't understand the Gibson to fender comparisons there are plenty of manufactures that make guitars more like Fenders then Gibson and they are trying to cut into the Fender market. Gibson's competition is Paul Reed Smith (PRS) not Fender.

I just Love Guitars not names. Sound,Quality,Beauty

There is nothing versatile about Zakk Wylde or Slash. Their instruments give them the thick and creamy tone they desire. But they don't compare to the tones that Hendrix or Robin Trower get out of their Strats.

They are better in way. Llisten to McCartney playing his 60 Cherry burst LP or Joan Jett and a Melody Maker, Les Paul himself or Neil Young playing Old Black. I would say a few of those guys are verstaile. Each guitar has its place. Its all in what your looking for.
This does not sound like a Stratocaster.

Don't want to disappoint you but i own this exact same guitar except with a pearly gate in the bridge and a tone knob and its a true Fender Strat and not a Squier..It does sound like a Strat except with a Humbucker in the bridge..It sounds no different then a Lonestar Strat in the bridge position...
It is much easier to mod a Strat you have all the different pickup configurations..Standard 3 single coil..Fat Start Humbucker single single..Big Apple Strat Double Humbucker...Showmaster set up with the Humbucker single humbucker..Lead special single bridge Humbucker or single bridge single coil..
Then on top of that you have at minimum on the older strat a 3 position switch with the majority having a 5 position and then with the delta tune and S-1 the different tones are almost endless ...This is all the things that make a Strat more versatile guitars..
Im not taking anything away from a Les Paul i own one..But they do not come anywhere close to being as versatile as a Strat...

deffinately play both. i have a buddy who works in a music shop and says that some of the upper gibsons are not very well crafted. the bindings are loose that type of jazz. if you get an american strat they tend to hold value well. if you get tired of it you could trade or sell it for a gibby. but let your ears and soul be the judge

Big strat fan here. I just ordered one. But go over to the gibson forum and pose the same question. Let us know what they have to say.

Invader I know exactly what it is I bought it new an I never said it was a Squier it is a Fender Straight Six Stratocaster they made 831 of them. They are all black with maple neck one Fender Atomic Humbucker and a volume knob only! No tone control so I don’t know what you have unless you bougtht one and modified it. What I meant is that it is not your typical strat. Sound. I guess I should have stated it a little clearer.
Here’s a picture of the whole guitar nothing has been change its all stock.

I am totally convinced about buying the strat next month. I'll post pics as soon as I get it. I've been looking at an Am Std. Strat with the color I want on sweetwater. Maybe online shopping is a better deal than GC because they don't charge tax and have free shipping :?: I want to put lindy fralin real 54's in it too.

You may save a few bucks by buying online..But i always suggest unless you know exactly what you want to go and play the guitars ..If it is only a matter of saving $50 your much better off going and playing about ten of them as each and everyone will feel different and that way you can find the one that fits you the best...
If its a matter of saving a few hundred i would take my chances mail order...Then have it set up the way you want it...
Just like the Strat you can't go wrong with any Fralin or John Suhr Hand wounds...The 54's will give you a very Glassy warm tone ..But do not expect them to be super hot or loud....My 3 favorite pup sets on the market are the Suhr V60'S..Fralin Blues Specials and The Fralin 54's...IMHO they are slightly above the rest of the pups out there for Strats
