It is fairly simple to do. You just need to cut the pickguard out to fit the humbucker. Then you may want to switch the volume pot for a 500K and either make one of the tones for the bridge and the other for the singles. Then you will need another 500k pot for the humbucker tone, and leave the 250K for the tone on the singles.

It's not actually as hard and long winded as it seems.

More times than I can count with the same being said for the wiring/component combinations!

I used a stacked s/c sized humbucker - Seymour Duncan 'lil'59 - to save all the aggravation with the scratchplate. Are all Strats routed for a humbucker in the bridge position? That would be an obvious problem too if this is not the case.

Yes, a few times and it is very easy as long as it has been routed for it. But many older guitars are not and if thats the case you are in for some wood working skills to enter the picture.

I would make sure that you're using a humbucker that allows you to split coils. That way you can use one coil to combine with the middle pickup for switch position 2. Mixing a whole humbucker in with the single coil middle pickup probably wouldn't sound right. You can find several wiring diagrams for HSS configurations at the Fender website in the tech support area.
