Well, I still have a mystery.

As for the pic, I had to upload it at a picture hosting site, then post it from there. I like Webshots.com because they have an easy copy and paste option for posting in forums. You don't even need to use the "img" button to do it, just copy from Webshots "post in forum" and paste here in your reply. Photo Bucket is another popular picture hosting site.

Well, I got it up there but it's too small to see the details. How do I make it bigger?

That's different that the other Japanese models I've seen. It sure is a nice shade of white.

At webshots, you can select the size of your posted picture with those numbered buttons above the copy/paste command. 100 200 425 500 600.
This is 425

Here is my collection of Strats. On the left is the Japanese Strat, on the right is a 1995 American Standard and in the middle is my 2006 American Deluxe.

I like the White with Maple neck on the right. That's one of the best Strat colors.
I'm pretty sure mines American, but so many people over the years have told me it's Japanes my confidence has shaken.
One guy in my local Music store tried to convice me to "Give up that old Japanese Strat." But when he saw the Tremelo wasn't what he assumed it was, he sudenly wanted to trade a '79 Hardtail Strat for it.

I wouldn't be ashamed of my Japanese Strat. It is a beautiful instrument and plays and sounds great. It is very well built and I really can't tell that much difference between it and the American. BTW, I love the polka dot Strat. That is pure '60s.

Thanks, that's a MIM Buddy Guy Strat. Sounds like Hedrix's Red House sound.

I wouldn't mind if my white one was Japanese. That guitar has made women cry and men throw chairs. But when I bought it from Guitar Center in '89, The KLOS radio commercial said it was American, but they also said it a Jimi Hendrix Commemerative Strat Sale. I'm afraid the "sale" was commemerating Hendrix, not the guitar. They could have misled about the make, too. It doesn't say "Made in Japan", so I still think it's American.

Either way, it's my #1 and my Gramma helped me get it when I was 17, so it's mine forever. But I'd sure like to clear up the mystery.

Have you checked the serial number on Fender's product dating pages?

Yes, but it has an E85XXXX serial number, which would make it a 1988 American(if I understand E8+5 5 digits). Japan used E serial Numbers (E+6 digits) from 84-85. :?

I have the same exact guitar. It's a Contemporary Standard 22. It was my first real Strat. I bought it brand new in '87, still have the original receipt. These had the Kahler trem factory-installed. There's not enough money in the world to buy the thing off of me, but it turns out they're actually *very* well-crafted and great-playing guitars!

A couple of years ago I picked up another earlier model Standard 22 (this one made around '85-'86, has the System 1 Fender/Kahler bridge) because I wanted a maple fretboard. Here they are side-by-side. I've done nothing to the sunburst, but I did switch out the p'ups on the white one to Texas Specials.

Hello from northern France!

Thank you for the informations. I have this type of guitar too. There is at least three years that I've been trying to find the origins of this wonderful instrument and here is what I discovered:

- Mine is sure a japanese build Strat
- It comes from the Fugijen factory
- it was build between '84 and '87
- You won't be able to date yours (or mine) exactly because the different parts weren't systematically used the day they were finished (so they mixed "old" and new parts when they finished a guitar, see?)
- There are writtings at the jonction between the body and the neck that can give several informations (I know by these that mine is a 62 reissue, for example)
- the use of Gotoh mechanics is typical from the japanese strats (at list at the time, today I don't know)

I bought mine in my city, Dunkerque (Dunkirk for you who speak english), and the guy who sold it had bought it second hand (sorry for my english, I do what I can :) ) in '85. He sold it because he needed money to buy a Selmer type guitar (to play jazz manouche, you surely know Django Reinhardt). The serial number is E859554 and there's a Kahler Spyder on it too.

I didn't play a lot of guitars but it's such a magical instrument! I wouldn't sell it for anything too!

Here are pics of "the beast"
