I have a question for those who have a American Deluxe or have installed the S-1 switch in their Strat, especially if it's installed with some vintage style pickups (54s, 69s, etc). Obviously it can be used to have all 3 pickups selected at once, but what is the difference between it and just using a push-pull pot? I know there is a circuit built in with a capacitor. How does it change the tone when you use other pickup selections?

Sorry, I looked but the shops that are around me don't have any of the Am Dlxs in stock to play with.

Thanks

Hi Rob08: the S1 does somewhat different things in different Strats. I have an HSS withe the switch and it offers a bunch of extra options, particularly series wirings that you don't normally get on a Strat (where pickups are usually linked in parallel). You also get the choice of middle pickup with one coil of the bridge humbucker or both coils:

Similarly, on an SSS Strat with the S1 you get a comparable group of extra connections that aren't possible with just a switch to bring in the third pickup, as you say. It's not just the linking of pickups, it's the different ways those links are made:

Study those diagrams: you'll see what it's all about.

Cheers - C

I was actually looking at that SSS diagram earlier today.

With the s1 down the sss version gives a nice p90ish sound in positions 2 and 4. 1 and 5 get nearer to underpowered humbucker. Your never going to sound like slayer with it but it will do a passable job for bachman tuner overdrive.

You have to have scn pickups for the s1 to work properly. Regular pickups are not the same.
