The name might change, the features will get switched around, some new gimmick is added, an unpopular one is removed. The bottom line: Don't worry. This is Fender's flagship guitar. It will never be discontinued as a genre.

Unlikely it will ever be discontinued. Even today it is the best selling guitar that Fender makes followed by the American Std Telecaster.

Interestingly, Fender is offering a $100 rebate on any American Standard bought over the next couple of months.

Why wouldn't Fender just bring the price down to original list price of $999 or just bring it down to that price for a limited time. I'm not a big fan of rebates, I'm sure many are the same way.

Without attempting to speak for Fender, I believe that the rumours surrounding the discontinuance of the American Standard, as well as the simultaneous rebate offer, serve two purposes. First, it is a sales trick to make the guitar seem more desirable than it already is -- and believe me, it's a much-drooled-over guitar -- as well as setting the stage for FMIC to unveil its "new" replacement. And second, the increase in desirability will, I should think, create a commensurate increase in sales.

I don't believe for a second that the basic guitar we know and love as the American Standard is ever going to disappear entirely. That would be an absurd decision, especially considering that Fender guitars have always sold well, are selling well, and will continue to sell well in the foreseeable future. I agree with the previous posts in that a "new" and, consequently, much more exciting model will eventually be unveiled to "replace" the American Standard. Much ado about nothing, if you ask me.

Never heard that one. Most likely a rumor started by someone who would not own anything but a HWY One

Didn't the standard just gone through a change, along with the Highway Ones? I think it is another marketing scheme to get the current model to sell quickly, and a opportunity for Fender the jack up the price again on another updated standard.

Hey Fender, who do you think will be buying these guitars??? Last I read the unemployment rate in USA is at a high 9.7% and climbing.

http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=usunemployment&met=unemployment_rate&tdim=true&q=unemployment+rate+in+us

Me for example just recently purchase a roadworn strat for $599 new from my local GC. I will never pay $949 for a roadworn, but for that price I will pay for an Amercian Standard, which I have in the past.

Why is Fender increasing the price, while Gibson is derceasing thier price???

I have hear rumors that the Highway 1 will be discontinued. I have not heard anything on the American Standard. I just could not see Fender discontinuing their "flagship" guitar, unless it is about to go through another change. Maybe Brad can shed some light on this when the time is right?

Many players did, but many players DIDN'T like (just to name a few): Schaller Strap Locks which are now gone, the TBX pot which is now gone, the newer style saddles which are now gone, you get the idea.

Exactly right. Someone is confusing the Hwy 1 (which is MIA) with the American Standard. Let's not get silly, people...

With the updates, its a modified old school strat. Updates that many would of done with a stock old school strat. I like that fact that it has a thin coat of nitro finish as well.
