I find the middle pickup indispensable for 50s-style rhythm stuff. Otherwise, I'm mostly a neck-pickup guy.

My most frequently used position is the neck and middle pickups together, or the bridge on its own. I have a 3-position switch, though, so I'm often knocking it and getting just the neck or middle pickups. When that happens, I play around for half an hour or so and ask myself why I don't use those pickups on their own more. I like a slightly overdriven middle pickup, but really don't enjoy that on the neck.

Then my toddler son comes up and removes the knob altogether. Many of my endeavours end that way...

Neck 70% of the time, middle the other 30%.

Martian, how the (bleep) do you get a neck /bridge combo sound? Is there a 7-way switch out there?

Hi JSJH: dunno if this is how Martian is doing it, but this is one way (note the diagram at the bottom of the page):

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... tches.html

I believe Forum user Miami Mike has a guitar with that switch on to achieve neck+bridge and likes what he gets.

Though, having read many of his posts, I suspect a simple push/pull pot to bring in the neck for seven sounds is probably Martian's secret...

Cheers - C

The absolute best way to get that sound is

And you can do it with whats already in the guitar.

I agree with Martian... it really depends on the tone of the song that you are playing. I find myself changing pickups while playing certain parts of a song. I have found that I like the sound of the Shine On You Crazy Diamond when I go from the neck/middle and switch to the bridge. Layla, I like to bounce from the bridge to the middle pickup, etc.

With Distortion...Metal--Bridge or Bridge/Middle. Blues--Bridge/Middle or Middle/Neck.

Clean...Depends on what I am doing...Middle, Middle/Neck (love that one for slow songs), and neck.

Yep your right i used to use the bit of wire from the trem wrapped around my little finger. I dont use it anymore though. I found its only practical for practicing. Whenever i tried it onstage i'd rip the wire off the trem.
