one thing you'll want from the JM neck is the satin finish on the neck. the SRV lacks that. not to mention the JM should be a little smaller (the 9.5 radius compared to the '12 radius)

just try the JM a little more. It will grow on you, TRUST ME!

They are very, very similar guitars. The Mayer Strat has a slightly smaller neck with a satin finish and those oh-so-wonderful pickups only found on the Mayer Strat which ironically enough sound more like SRV's pickups than the SRV Strat's.

I vote Mayer Strat.

Why would anyone want to spend 2 grand on a guitar and start swapping parts and modding it is beyond my comprehension, and yes I mean the SRV decal on the pickguard. There is only one SRV and if I buy an artist series guitar it is because I like the features and tone and playability of that ax more than anything to do with the artist and I just feel the big SRV decal is to much for my taste and if John Mayer played one it was in tribute more than anything. Come to think of it why does John Mayer even have an artist series guitar. I will admit he is a talented guy who can pretty much do it all but as a guitar player is he anything really special NO. I mean are there any signature Mayer licks I dont know of and I think there are at least 25 guys more deserving of a signature guitar than him. Luca you have to go sit down and play a bunch of strats and you will know the right one for you asking guys on the forum is not the way to go as everyone has different taste. But one thing I think everyone will agree on is that everyone of the guitars mentioned will get the job done for the music you want to play.

Billy Corgan can't do sh**, and he has a signature model.

LEE RANALDO and THRUSTON MOORE have signature models, and they have to be two of THE worst sounding players out there.

are those guys special?? NO.

John does indeed have a few signature licks, and a signature style of vibrato. you are blinded by the ignorance of "There are people better than him" OF COURSE THERE ARE.

BUT,

is there anyone out there better than John that are from THIS GENERATION? or anyone with the songwriting brilliance he has? or anyone that has an ENORMOUS fan base? hmm?

Didn't think so.

to all the mayer-haters - can it already. like it or not, John HAS a signature model. and it has to be one of the sweetest sounding sigs around.

It's not that simple. There's an awful lot of great talent out there, much of it unrecognized only because the wheel didn't spin in their direction. I saw a young player last week who fronts a local Santana cover band. This young man really has his chops both vocally and with his guitar. Saturday I will revisit a concert featuring a Pink Floyd cover band whose guitar players are, as well, quite accomplished. Watch the video accompanying the current promo for the next blues demigod. You'll understand. And you don't do too badly yourself, you know.

Mayer's found a mix that sells. He's not lost in the blues. He's found a pop thread with broad market appeal, and that's clever business sense. Personally, and as I watch and listen to him work, I see a mix of Dave Matthews and SRV in his persona and performance. Though talented and well schooled, I do not see him as an 'original'. To his credit, he reaches out to his fan base, and that is a plus. Just my take on it.

I don't ask you to suppress your fervor, simply measure it. Remember, these icons we create are mere working people like you and me, who depend on US for their careers. Be circumspect about our place in their lives and their defense. They really owe US more than we owe them.

Look forward to your new guitar......eventually.

Doc.

Nooo. Don't break their balls. Everyone of us has artist that we like. I think their guitar work is very original and at least breaks away from our standard blues/rock styles. Oh the agony of the internet and everyone's opinion being broadcast.

LOL

Chanman and Doc am I missing something here. I believe it said in my post that I thought Mayer had the whole package and was a talented guy. So that equals hater? I just said the guy in my book is nothing special as a player. He is a quality player but is he a great player-no. The first half of his career he was a Dave Mathews clone even Doc pointed that one out. He had some nice acoustic songs with some complex chord voicings I will admit that. Then he went electric and yes I bought that cd with the trio and was really disappointed because he never cut loose on the whole album. All I can say is the guy can write, sing and play but there is nothing that stands out guitar wise as special if there is please let me know. And Chan I agree with you on the Billy Corgan,Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore statements. But I also think if Mayer cut loose with Kenny Wayne Sheppard who is his age he would get planted.

Or with Joe Bonamassa who is just a few months older than John.

check the Ask M.E. section of the forum and see the thread on The Black One. it is kind of surprising that after all the hype ppl still don't know (I don't mean you, man. just speaking in general)
