I've tried to adjust my neck action according to how the owner's manuals, saying that i shouldn't fool with it if there's too much resistance when you turn the allen wrench in either direction, unfortunately that's my problem. And I really don't feel like taking to the shop and paying for something that really isn't that difficult to do myself. What should i do? If it is of any importance the truss rod opening is at the neck (2007 Highway One Strat).

It's probably gonna have alot of resistance, they are normally pretty tight when turning one way, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

It only takes a smidgen of a turn for it to start bowing or straightening the neck. So for every hair you turn, just make sure you pay attention to the neck. You also do this with your strings in tune, which is why the trussrod is gonna be tight to begin with. It should be tight when your straightening the neck and loose when the neck is bowing. Common sense should tell you how far each way the trussrod can go without damaging it.

Let's just say that if something does happen when you first start to turn it, then it's ruined to begin with and it's not your fault, it's Fenders.

This is what got me adjusting my truss rods. It is spot on and now all of my guitars have great action without buzz. This trick is to hold down the 1st and 12th and then look for a small amount of clearance on the 7th. My Highway One was also hard to turn, but I got it perfect without any damage at all.

Here is what got me started...and it works.
