how much do you think it would cost to build a strat with parts from ebay and other places? if youve built your own strat how much did it run you and would you recommend it? anyone know anywhere that you can get parts at a cheap price?

also feel free to post pictures of your project.

i want to build my own strat but right now is not a good time. one of these days i will though.

I was thinking about building one about a year ago and my calculated costs for parts only were about $600.

I've built a Strat w/ a Warmoth body and neck. All other parts were Fender and it cost me about $800.00

I'm building a Telecaster the same way and it's costing me about the same.

The cost includes labor.

I'm going to have to do that someday. Get a EJ neck, ash body, some good pups...yeah, that would be fun. I'd probably end up spending about a grand. If you're trying to save cash you'd be better off just buying a used Highway One for about $500. But where's the fun in that right???

Last year I built a 2006 American Deluxe with parts bought on eBay. They were all brand new 2006 parts. I got about $900 in it so I saved a little. It is one sweet guitar.

I just finished mine. I purchased all Fender parts (used) on e-bay.

Robert Cray Hardtail in Inca Silver (some small belt buckle dings on back)
Robert Cray Hardtail Bridge (classic style)
Loaded 3-ply 60's Re-issue White Pickguard (Japanese)
Loaded 60's Style Rosewood neck (MIM)

Total cost under $400. It really plays and sounds nice. The guitar tech that did the setup was shocked at how much money I put into it.

Just watch e-bay and get a feel for how much stuff is going for. Don't get impatient and run up the auction and make sure the seller has a good reputation. Be prepared to lose some auctions. There will always be more.

Here is a picture of the finished guitar.

Good luck and let us know if you go this route.

- Tim

My project ran me about 8 or 9 hundred. It depends on what neck you get which pickups your looking for. etc.. Whats nice about it is you can pick all the parts you want and get a real sense of accomplishment when you are done. It is my favorite guitar to play.

I prefer to buy a half guitar and personalize, i recently buy a SQ squier '84, for $100, repainted and refreted $200, and a trio of lace sensor holy grail $200, and new electronics $50, and keep the original bridge, and fell much better than a others new strat i test.

If you want to use all or mostly genuine American Fender parts... Probably cost about the same as a new American Strat. But it is fun putting a Strat together to your own preferences!

Hey,

I just finished my SRV Number 1 Build project, and I think that grand total for the whole thing is under $800, and that's including the dremel bits, stain and few tools that I needed to pull it off.

Genuine American body and neck is going to cost... since Fender doesn't sell parts, its a sellers market. I've seen AM strat necks listed for $800. Since I really wanted to play what I was building and didn't have the scratch to drop that much on a neck when I could just buy another guitar for that, I opted for the SRV reissue neck from ALLPARTS... everything else in the build is AM Fender.

Although I'm still looking for the tuners that Fender Custom used on its limited run of 100 Number 1 Replicas.

Like Everyone else's post in here - Now that its sorta finished - I can't put it down. One of the most fulfilling things I've done lately... and it sounds just like it looks.

That is HIP! 8) If it sounds even half as cool as it looks, you've got a great axe! Did you do all the relic work yourself?

Actually I've been thinking lately about an SRV inspired Strat project myself. It wouldnt be a replica as such (I dont have that kind of skill!), but I'm thinking maybe an axe that captures a little bit of the vibe while still being "my" axe. I'm thinking of doing it with a one piece "Guitar Mill" body with thin nitrocellulose finish, a left-handed bridge and left-handed 62 reissue neck, and maybe a set of Seymour Duncan's "Antiquity" pickups...

Yeah, did all the relicing - a constant layer of nitro and polyurethane covered my apartment for a couple of months. I bought a really cheap Japan body first just to get an idea of what it was going to take to remove the finish... then dove into this one. Good thing too - cuz Fender doesn't skimp on the primer coat or the finish nitro.

I'm thinking very seriously about building another one that's just for me. I love the neck on this, but I didn't earn the wear on it the way that you're supposed to. Ah well - its a tribute and I can play it without fearing that I'm gonna mess up my investment...

I've got Texas Specials in this one with the vintage cloth wiring kit... and the tone is pretty darn close... a couple of tweaks on the GDEC and I can get pretty close to Jimi too... I can't wait to plug it into a full-stack and just cut loose.

I would love to build a Jimi but I've got to pick which one... Of course - I'd like it even more if someone just handed me one, but I do what I have to ;). Good luck on the build. One of these days I'll get my blog finished and posted of what I went thru.

JM
