I love the upgrades to the MIM strat last year I just got mine 2 months aga and cant put it down.

Should I get a matching telecaster?

I wish they sold the american pickups to retrofit the MIM.

But the new block might not sound any better with alnico 5s anyway.
THe new block ads power and the ceramic is a goo balance for the extra winds on the standard pickups anyways. So I guess the new standard is so good you dont realy need anything else!

The sky's the limit for pick up choices. Any of our pu's (SCN, Tex-Mex, 57'/62', etc.) will retro fit in your MIM Strat no problem.

Personally, right now, I'm really digging the 57'/62's
(Part #0992117000)

I think the pickups on the Standards are extreamly well designed.
They may not be glassy as the alnicos but the string balance is what I do not want to give up . I think I would go for a modern stager alnico 5 with beveled pole peices but no one makes One!!!!!

I stumbled on a 2005 or early 2006 LH Standard, and the price is pretty reasonable (on clearance, the last lefthanded guitar in the store). What exactly are the differences between the 2006 upgrade, and the earlier models? The guy at the store was not able to tell me. The price is hard to pass up, but not sure if I may regret it later.

Thanks for the advice,
Tom

I find that people at fender don't Know what an awesome guitar the 2006 is either.

Get the 2006

Many improvements hard to see but easy to hear.

THE block you tread the strings through is thicker. This does many things
gives a more powerful sound over all. Stabilizes the tunning in float mode for the trem.

Even the String tree stamp is better shape!

The pickups are beveled as well as having more windings I think it sounds like it anyway. I did not unravel to check!

The Pocket and the trem install is more precise since 2006.

The Frets are thicker . You have to get use to it but overall a big improvement in wear and playability.

The shielding is great 10 time s better than before 2005!!

IN short by now and hope fender continues to improve the standard so I can get another upgraded guitar in a few years instead of bitching on here because they slid or the American shop got lazy.

Fender need s to take this success and move forward in all areas from here and not rest on there laurels otherwise there will be a perception letdown in 5 years from now instead of a culture of continual improvement!!!!!!!

Better Keep making awesome Standard Guitars OR I Will Tell every one I know!!!!

Thats a threat

Yes, Fender definitely raised the standard (bad pun intended) with the latest upgrades.

I bought my MiM - Britney - in '99 and she is perfect. A couple of friends each bought one in 2002/3 and they weren't quite as well made. Then, last month I picked up a new Std with maple neck in the local shop and it was better than mine: that new, bigger block certainly makes a difference.

I got the really sweet deal at GC this past Saturday.
MIM Fender Standard Strat HSS-Electron Blue for $323. Roadrunner hardwood-tolex case for $77.
That's only $400...(so I axed the gig-bag for the case.) Paid my tax and got home for $430. I just happened on the right salesman that day with a smile for him and good things to say about my visits to his store. I think it paid off.

Yeah, I've got a lot of GAS for a Midnight Wine with Rosewood - it looks very, very nice.
