I'm waiting for the responses.

"What is wrong with you? People are dying for more sustain."

I guess I am not used to my new guitar yet. What techniques should I try to get better control? Palm muting? I feel and sound like I am stepping all over myself when I play.

I purchased a loaded pickguard that was from a Japanese Re-issue Stratocaster. The pickups have staggered poles. The body is a hardtail. The sounds and sustain are incredible, so I am not complaining. I am just not used to it.

Thanks,

Tim

Guitarplayers like to sustain notes in a solo, with natural sustain or
feedback.
If you're hearing sustain when playing rhythm then something's wrong
with your playing technique, both hands.
Damping at the bridge can help but also how much pressure you use
with your chording hand.

Been there. Moving from acoustic to electric you move to a very different instrument with a lot more capability for sustain and vibrato and other techniques, but have to control it. Once you get used to it, it's hard to want to go back to the acoustic stuff. Stratocasters are just amazing musical instruments that are capable of acoustic-like clarity that sounds like bells, and the meaty blues sound we all love, and everything else. Especially on bassier notes the sustain can be just flat out of control and wrong, and would never happen on an acoustic because they just are different.

The classic blues palm muting style of playing works for me and is really automatic now after so many years. If I can recall it without doing it, the picking hand rests on the bridge slightly muting the strings at the top to avoid excessive bass sustain. The notes on these strings still should sound but shouldn't do the big bass hummmmmm. For muted note strikes, you can then mute more by moving your picking hand more onto the strings, and for more sustain and louder bass notes, you can back away onto the bridge.

Strats don't have the kind of sustain that other guitars do. I'm very happy with the tones I get from my Hwy one strat, i just wish the sustain was longer. Anyone know how i can make it sustain as long as any strat could possibly go?

Have you tried a compressor? That'll help.

Like what? Even with my cheap solid state amp, I get a lot of sustain from my lightweight Alder Highway One.
