Hello fellow strat lovers, I posted awhile back asking if anyone knew what type of strat body I had purchased...it was all beat up, bad homemade relic etc..here's a few pictures of the body as it was when I received it, just to give you an idea of how brutal it was:

There really isn't any point trying to stick a neck on this thing and just ignore the fact that is a real eyesore...so I finally got around blasting off that unsightly paint, there were so many dings, dents, nicks and gouges it was unreal! A whole bunch of them penetrating the actual wood, the worst about 3mm deep.

Here it is midway through stripping the paint. ( I used Circa 1850 paint remover btw)

Almost done, the cavities are a pain in the butt...

I started by giving it a good all over sanding with some 220 grit, then filling in all the nasty spots. After everything was mosty level I gave it 2 coats of Deft sanding sealer.

After sanding it down again with some 220, then 320 grit I was ready to prime. I like to use BIN because it dries very quickly, and it's near impossible to get runs!

Image

Had to sand out a few more dents and give it another coat.

Image

I am ready to give it a base coat. I chose Krylons True blue...not bad after a couple of coats it might look sorta close to Lake Placid Blue...

Here it is after 3 coats:

5 coats:

I will add more later this week when I finish painting and begin the clear coating process....and for the record I am using an old yamaha strat copy neck that was broken for a handle....works great.

Thanks for looking!

Look really good. I thought your work looked to organized to have accidentally oversprayed the neck like that.

True but my concern with using the neck like that would be that when the finish dries along the neck-body joint and you go to romove the neck it could be stuck. I use a cut down aluminium fern strip for that reason and I don't have to worry about the finish sticking or cracking when removed because it does not fit against the sides of the pocket

Hi sgtvdub: nice work, and thanks for all the photos - we're enjoying 'em. Kudos especially for bothering to get all the old finish out of the cavities. That's a drag, but you'll feel good about it later.

One thing:

For those of us in other countries who sometimes call things by other names - what is BIN, please?

Can't wait to see it finished! Have you got hardware ready and waiting?

Cheers - C

Looking good!

Ceri, B-I-N is a über-fast-drying primer made by Zinsser. Don't know if they have this product in the UK or not:

Ha, indeed: Zinsser-UK. Goddit.

I see B-I-N is shellac based, so that particular one's probably not for me (far as guitars are concerned), but a whole new range of interesting products has come to my attention. Thank you, SlapChop.

I carefully removed the neck today and got lucky because it came off nicely. I will scrap that idea next time lol. I was kind of worried about that too I admit. There are a few nics around the outside of the input jack cavity, but they will be covered by the jack plate.

In response to Ceri, I do have hardware that I will be using for this project....pictures will be up later today. I live right beside the lake, and it's super nice out right now.

Time for this thing to go-

Well, hanging it from underneath works real good too. That's the way they do it at the Gibson factory. I think I will just do that next time

After 3 more coats, what do you think?

More pics later....beach time :D
