Ok, This is my first post, but I have lurked for a while.

Like the subject states, I have a 09 MIM Standard with a vintage trem problem. 3-in-1 is a trem friend.

Like the subject states, I have a 09 MIM Standard with a vintage trem problem. When I press down on the trem arm, it doesn't return to "0" it stays flat, but when I pull up, it will return to pitch. I have adjusted the nut slots to accommodate the 10-46 gauge Cleartones, as well as the springs to give the trem spec height off of the body. Usually I never have a problem setting up guitars, but this is baffling me. Can anyone give me some advice besides taking it to a tech for a setup. I don't waste my money on something I know how to do my self.

This just bugs me because, I can setup floyds, 2 points, etc. with no problems.

Thanks in advance
- Walley

Welcome!

Based on your complaint, it seems that the tremolo plate is getting hung up within the six plate screws somewhere.

Loosen all the strings to where none of them are exhibiting any pulling tension. Remove all the tremolo springs.

Loosen the six tremolo plate screws just enough until they are separated from the top of the plate. ONE AT A TIME, slowly tighten each screw until it just begin to lift the plate forward. Then, slowly back it out just to the point where it allow the plate to rest flush again on the body. Do the next screw, then the next until all six have been readjusted in this manner.

Respring, retune, etc; don't be surprised if you have to readjust the claw.

This should solve your problem.

You're treating a symptom and not a cause. Oil is not good for a guitar's finish and it will attract all sorts of dirt and grit. Your problem will actually worsen over time.

Thanks Martian, That worked. I do, however, think it is funny that Fender would recommend 3-in-1 machine oil for pivot points.

You're quite welcome.

Oil in general should not be used on a guitar, period. If a lubricant is truly needed rather than an adjustment, say in the nut slots or the tremolo arm threads for example, graphite is the way to go.

As to Fender, it is easier to unilaterally proclaim oil rather than to go into detail, explaining it the way I did. This is premising the person recommending the oil knows my procedure and/or the ramifications of using oil at all.

Yep...
I'd have to say NO OIL!!!! It can only bring problems in the long run... This goes for tuners and everything.... 8)
