BigJay, I think the word you're looking for is spelled "scoff."

And your scenarios don't illustrate but obfuscate the point. The question was not, "WOuld you like to make a profit?" The question was, "what Strat lover wouldn't pay this price for this guitar?"

It would seem the answer is, most of them. :D

Yah, well, spelling and grammar are not my strong suits.

Most Strat lovers "couldnt" pay this price. But if money wasnt the issue, the reason to buy that guitar isnt for its tone and playability. Its because it has potential investment value. This changes the dynamic of the conversation. If the Strats likely to appreciate, then few rational people "wouldnt" buy it.

I would agree that few rational people wouldn't buy it IF that guitar was priced within market (it's overpriced) and was the only available investment.

I would never spend $125,000 on a single guitar, but would instead invest part of that money, say, in my business (expanded studio space and microphones) and the rest in currently depressed stocks, both of which would bring ROI faster and more surely than a vintage guitar. This represents a rational choice that includes not buying that guitar.

Wonder what Alain thinks of this one?

Discussion over - I bought it.

Of course I didn't: as you know, I prefer a maple 'board...

You can always find something on Stratosphere to swap out that neck with., and then sell the orphan for more than you paid for the guitar. 8)

Hi Doc: no, I'm thinking more along these lines:

It looks a lot like Ceri's recent project guitar!

For $125K, I'd rather have Ceri's guitar plus a small house!

Gotta be a quiet corner of my country where a very small house can still be had for that money. There's a deal to be done here, I feel sure!

Cheers - C

There's a '63 Sonic blue strat just down the road from me... very similar instrument, rosewood board, but this one has a mahogany body -- quite rare, I believe. Asking price is around $19K. I was refinished, hence the lower price... but it was a factory refin done in 1964! That's almost better than an original finish. Collectors, eh? That's the one I'd buy if I had more dollars than sense.[/i]

'For $125K, I'd rather have Ceri's guitar' Image[

Two things are recognized here: a well crafted and doubtless fine playing instrument and the gifted individual who created it. In essence, a true work of art. We watched the progress of its birth, did we not? What ever amount you'd pay for it would be a tribute to both and of far greater value intrinsically by any stretch of the imagination than that '62 'debtor's hope'

Ah, sorry, Nikininja -- I was converting roughly to US dollars. $24K in Aussie dollars. Still a very reasonable proposition if you're flush, which I'm beginning to think I never truly will be.

The dealer selling the guitar is reputable and knows his stuff... many of the guitars he sells have come back through the shop a number of times over the years as people turn over their collections, so he usually knows an individual instrument's history if it's a desirable one. With this guitar, they noticed the mahogany body after removing the neck for their routine photo session and seeing the dark wood in the unfinished portions of the cavity. Many years ago an earlier owner had swapped out some parts, and the dealer made sure to track down the ones that had been sold and hung onto them in the event of the guitar's return. That's a smart dealer. He seems to get a lot of business from touring musicians... there's an immaculate blonde '50s tele from John5's collection at the moment. If only.

That guitar stood out to me because many of the other strats there do run between $60-125K. All dependent on condition, provenance and originality, I guess, but the prices always seem to closely follow the guidelines set by the Vintage Guitar Guide. As a player, I think if I were ever to be able to buy such an instrument I'd get a refin... price is much better, and someone thought enough of the guitar to go to the trouble to spruce it up.

Thats £11,700. Still a bargain. The import tax on that would take it to £16300 ish. About the max you'd pay for a refinished 63/64. You'd want everything else on the guitar to be absolutely original and in fantastic condition for that.
