A Strat can be used for any type of music, but I'd suggest you use it with a modeling amp or a multi effects board if you want the maximum versatility out of your rig.

I started off my playing career some 25 years ago now...When i first started playing i thought Strats were relics of the past..I was a firm humbucker SG /Les Paul player...I wish i would've known then what i know now...After playing twin humbucker guitars for 17 years i walked into a guitar store looking for another Gibson for my collection...I told the sales man what i was after tone wise and genre wise...He brought me a new Strat Ultra...I snickered at him made some comment about bring me an antique but i hooked it to a JCM 800 just like mine and gave it a try..Although that day i wasn't ready to change my ways the seeds were planted ..That day i ended up buying a Ibanez 7 string 540 ltd H.S.H guitar..I can't knock that guitar it was a great player...
Fast forward to about 4 years ago once again i was in the market for another guitar...The memory of that Strat ultra had made an impression ..I walked into a music store and there was a Fat Strat ultra with lace sensor pups sitting there for $900 i bought it that day ..4 years ago i owned not one Strat all Gibson Aria and Ibanez Humbucker guitars...Today i own all Strat and Strat type guitars ...Except for 1 semi hollow body guitar...In these last 4 years my tone has improved 110%...My versatility in playing different genre's of music has increased ten fold...I have also become a much more well rounded guitarist.
Is it all because of Strats ?The answer to that is yes...And the reason why is real simple playing a Strat has given me far more tone possibilities then the dual humbucker guitars...The clarity of the single coils ..The multi positions available from the 3 pick up combination and just the general tone a Strat can bring opened my eyes to explore new musical options...I truly and with 100% of my being believe that a H.S.S STRAT IS THE MOST VERSATILE GUITAR EVER MADE !!!!!!!!

+1 for Texas.

A modeling amp or re-configurable, like a Cyber-Twin, will give you an incredible range of sound options.

Stick an excellent Srat into a Cyber-Twin and if you find a type of guiitar music that combo CAN'T play, please advise...

...personally, ain't found one yet.
