Hi everyone. I just wanted to post my thoughts on the Roadworn line of Strats. Just spent an extended amount of time at GC (good thing the boss wasn't around :?) test driving a RW Strat. I can't believe how nice the neck is. I've got an '08 MIA Strat that I absolutely love but man oh man the neck on this RW felt and played much better than mine. I'm not sure I liked the sound as much as my MIA but I simply loved the neck (and the looks).

Anyway, I'm envious of all of you who own a RW. I'm curious as to your thoughts on how they sound.

That's exactly what I was thinking the first time I played one. It actually didn't feel like my MIM Standard at all, it was a little thicker (60s Road Worn) whereas my MIM has a very thin neck.

I wasn't blown away by the sound, but I didn't think it was bad either. I think that if I had played it with a better amp and messed with the settings it would have sounded great.

I dont believe the RW Strats are special except for being beat up. I could be wrong, but I believe they are basically an MIM Standard thats been worked over with a hammer, screwdriver and some sandpaper.

Thanks for paining that word picture, Jay!

I actually didn't like the neck. I was expecting the worn part of the neck to actually feel worn, like a well played vintage guitar, as they do with the custom shop series. When I played it and found that it was worn, then finished afterward to feel like a brand new neck, I immediately put it down.

The worn look is cool. A worn feel is cooler. At least to me.

I'm read many mixed reviews of these. I don't think I'd ever get one simply due to the fact that they're all clones of each other. The "relic" is artificial and there's no actual story to it.

I chose a HWY 1 for the feel & decent sound, but also because the finish will become personal over time.

I quite liked the look and feel of the RW strats but I wouldn't buy one because I'd rather have the guitar be worn down by my playing instead. Or even if I relic'ed it myself just so it'd be personal to me. I just wish the Am Standard strats came in thin Nitro finishes.

:( I know what you mean. In a way it's better that abuse doesn't show quite as easily though, I guess.

Yeah. In fact, with the thick poly finishes I'd try really hard to keep dings and such off. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine to have a shiny new looking guitar with 1 or two visible dings/scratches. I realized that when I dinged my accoustic on the corner of my desk :(

Hah, good job :P I usually wipe down my tele w/ the poly just to keep it looking nice. I'm looking forward to getting that hwy 1 in though so I can treat it like crap  It's gonna be great

Very much looking forward to it

That way at least there won't be a billion copies of it as with Road Worn's.

I must say I wouldnt probably buy a Road Worn but I tried 2 they had at the shop and the neck felt great on both. That was of course the first thing I noticed.

I played one for about an hour and I definitely thought the neck was the best thing the guitar had going for it; though to be fair those are also the best pups I've heard in an MIM Strat too.

But the overall impression I got was that it was a cheap guitar dressed up (or beat up) to look like something more than it actually was. I'm not going to get into all my feelings on the whole "relic" school of thought. But suffice it to say I don't think these guitars really measure up to other guitars you can get for the same, or less money. I've played $600 Schecters (for example) that totally waste these RW Strats. I've been MUCH more impressed by the Squier Classic Vibe Strats I've played lately for 1/3 the price of these RWs. But to each their own. For some people who are more into the whole relic thing I'm sure these guitars are a long-anticipated breath of affordable fresh air. But I won't be buying one.

Just as a side note I saw Musician's Friend had one recently marked down as a "scratch and dent" item. Forgive my ignorance but how did they know? And isn't that the whole point in the first place?
