ok, I have a few Strats.....to go along with a MIA Tele, Gibson Flying V, and a Peavey Strat with only a bridge humbucker. I was thinking of putting 2 humbuckers into a Strat I have that needs new pups and a new pickguard any way. I like the sound of the V, as well as a Gibby LP, so why not have a Strat like that.......any pros? Cons?

I appreciate any and all advice.....

The cons are that it wont sound like your V or any other gibson guitar. Also you wont have the traditional strat sounds.

The pro's are that it will have a sound all of its own.

That pretty well sums it up!

I have a Strat with Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro Humbuckers and it sounds a lot like Slashes Les Paul. Mostly because those are the pickups he uses in his Les Paul. I also have a Gibson Les Paul with Gibson pickups and the Strat sounds much more like Slashes guitar.

If you put a Gibson 490R humbucker in the neck and a Gibson 498T humbucker in the bridge, I believe it will sound a lot like a Gibson LP despite the wood difference. But you will loose the Strat sound completely.

Get a Gibson Les Paul Studio. The idea behind the Studio is to get the Les Paul tone from it but not pay extra for all the binding work and other cosmetic extras of the Standard and Custom LP's. Its still made in the U.S. and will hold its value overtime. I think they are about 1,299 at Guitarcenter. That's about as cheap as a Les Paul from Gibson gets. The Epiphone LP's sound nice but they are made in China and do not hold their value.

I like the idea alot. Seeing Mick Mars live is what originally gave me the idea. These days he seems to only play HH Strats. After all, if you want a pure SSS, then grab the Strat you have right next to it, right? To me, to get that heavy crunch, you need humbuckers. And I like the way a Strat plays, so what is so wrong with putting full humbuckers in it? Suh-weet...

One thing, though. I'd stay away from Gibson pups. To me it's kinda like putting a Chevy small block in a Mustang. It just don't seem right...

'Thought a Strat with two big HBs was called an SG...?

If it isn't a collectible, why not do it?

To be honest I think the dual humbuckers Fender makes for its big apple Strats sounds great, not to mention it was designed to be in a Fender guitar.

Go for it after all your looking for a humbucking sound and thats what you are going to get. I would also checkout what else is out there as there are a ton of new buckers. I did it with my tele and I love how it sounds with Dimarzios it does not sound like a tele but that was the intention to get a humbucking sound but with the playing comfort of one of my favorite axes.

i prefer the standard over the studio, ive played them side by side a dozen times and the standard has won me over ever time...its more than cosmetcs

thanks for all the replies.....

No, a Gibson SG is a guitar that WISHES it was a Fender....LOL

As far as a Gibby LP, I will eventually add one to the collection, but I am not trying to make my Strat sound like a Gibby, I just like the sound that 2 HBs can make. I have played a Tele with 2 HBs and it has a nice sound....so, I want to do something with the extra Strat.

I guess the next thing to do is rersearch all of the HBs that are available and see which has the tone I am looking for. This Strat will also have 12's on it for a smoother jazz sound.

Ok, back to my research....keep it coming.....

Jimmy Herring is a fine guitarist that uses a Strat with the HH config. His is a custom shop model fitted with two SD '59 reissues and wired for 2 volumes 1 tone. I If you google him you will find plenty of clips of him playing his Strat. I really like his tone although I'm sure it's very processed. Seen him live with various bands many times and he really cuts through the mix. Every now and then I think about putting a HH Strat together but I like my single coils too much.
