Hi. I been thinking of buying a American strat deluxe for a long time now but I can't make up my mind. The reason that the topic is named X-Road28 is I saw that he (you) had an American deluxe I was woundering what your thougts where about it. You (he) also had an Custom shop guitar and I´m wondering how does two are compared to eachother?

Jacobthebluesman,

Sorry for the late reply, I've been tied up at work lately. To answer your question I love them both, but they do have some very distinct differences.

American Deluxe:

I chose the Dlx after trying out several guitars and decided on it based on feel and the extra options it offered. It has a soft "V" neck 9.5 radius, rolled edges, locking tuners, SCN pup's and the S1. It feels like a worn glove to me and I get endless tone options with S1, the noiseless pup's are indeed dead quite, as I am not a fan Hum they are perfect for me.

For the price it was and still is the best deal out there, IMHO. As time went on I began looking for a Custom Shop Strat that offered some of those same details without a high price tag. I found the Pro Closet Classic.

Custom Shop Pro Closet Classic:

A true workhorse is all I can say about it, has a light aged finish with some visible checking on the Nitro finish, SCN pups, Sperzel locking tuners, roller nut, 12" radius and the Greasebucket circuit which is a very cool option. Tone wise I can go form Rock to Blues to Jazz with ease. The "C" profile neck feels equally comfortable to me.

Note, that there are two types of Pro's. One with 21 frets and the truss rod adjustment at the heel and the one I have which has 22 frets and the truss rod adjustment at the headstock ( again my personal preference ). They are harder to find as opposed to the 21 fret which are out there.

I believe FMIC made the biggest marketing mistake of there life in producing the Pro and pricing it as they did. I mean that in a good way, they are by far the best deal on a Custom Shop Axe on the market. That said I think they realized that and adjusted the price a bit.

If you are interested in the Pro's I suggest you contact Frank at The Music Gallery by clicking on the link below. He is a true gentleman and will steer you in the right direction, they have a batch of Pro's in stock ( 21 fret ) in several custom colors.

I'm not sure what your price range is, but can tell you that if your preference is a strat with modern appointments you will not go wrong with either one. The Dlx will serve you well for a long time, the Pro will blow your mind right away.

I've never owned a Custom Shop strat, but I've played several. I did own an American Deluxe which I sold to get an EJ.

The Am Deluxe is a great guitar. I actually liked mine better then some of the Custom Shop axes I played. You can't go wrong with it.

Why did you sell your AM DLX? Is the EJ a better guitar?

Oh yes, at least in my opinion. The Am Deluxe is a sweet guitar, don't get me wrong. But....the EJ just rings so beautifully. The thin nitro finish makes for a very acoustic body. I like the pups better also. All in all it's the stratiest strat I've ever played. They could have easily put a Custom Shop logo on it and charged $400 more and no one would have complained. Check out the reviews at Harmony Central.
