Hey everyone,

Now I've owned the EC for over a year now, and just recently the pole piece on the D-string neck pickup decreased in strength. Now I can't buy a replacement without buying a whole new set. Furthermore I can't find a replacement pole piece. If I were to swap out the pickup for another one, what should I get that won't mess with the polarity?
Also any suggestions on fixing the pole piece if it is possible?

Thanks

Actually, those polepieces on the Vintage Noiseless pickups can be pushed up, down, in or out of the pickup.

Take your pickguard off and push that polepiece up ever so slightly (and gently) from the bottom of the pickup, thus making it a bit higher off the pickup and closer to the string. If this doesn't solve your problem, and I would find it rather strange if it didn't, somehow only that pole piece was demagnetized. Strange as it may be and if this was the case, if you are in the continental US, I have extra VN polepieces, one of which I could mail to you.

I did try that, pushing it up no luck, I ended up testing it and turns out the one end is almost completely dead in terms of magnetic pull. Also sadly I can't order that single pickup because I'm in Canada and Fender just changed distributors and for some reason they won't ship it.

I did try switching the pole around, which resulted in dead spots then switched all of them around which worked great except for the polarity in the 4th position became an issue.

In terms of the extra pole piece I would pay for shipping as long as it isn't outrageous (which it shouldn't be because it's New Jersey to Toronto area). I'm currently just waiting to see if my local shop can track one down or find a replacement pickup. I should know by Tuesday, maybe we could work something out around then.

Thanks Martian and cwpainter

You're quite welcome.

I cannot see you springing for a whole new pickup though when all you need to replace is a bad pole piece. Besides, I'd be sending it in a regular envelope to you; reinforcing your point, how much could it cost?

Keep me posted.

Martian I have to laugh. You are the only one I know who would just happen to have a spare pole piece for a noisless pup.. And by the way that was way cool of you to offer that. You always offer to help .I respect you for that

Well, thank you! You'd be surprised at some of the 'oddball' parts I have lying around. It even surprises me sometimes.

Like I said, I just can't see him springing for an entire pickup because of one lousy pole piece, it's just not right.

I'm glad to help and truly appreciate those who appreciate it.

Last post on replacements for VN's in the Clapton centered on Kinmans as a solid option.
