Number Four: Hendrix Tribute Stratocaster (1997-2000)

January 19, 1997, Fender Press Release:

In the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix single-handedly stretched the sonic possibilities of the guitar and, in the process, changed rock music--forever. In his gifted hands, the instrument became a major vehicle of expression. It talked, cried, exorcised and exulted as he glided with exuberance and ease from searing, blistering, electric blues to feedback-laden, free-form jazz to smoothly crafted torch ballads.

In honor of the guitar-wielding legend, Fender Musical Instruments and Experience Hendrix, LLC (the family of Jimi Hendrix) have just released the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster. "Modeled after the same Strat that Jimi played at his historic performance at the Woodstock Music Festival of August 1969, the instrument is bound to delight generations of guitar players and music history enthusiasts for years and years," noted Jack Shelton, senior vice president of sales at Fender.

For starters, the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster, which is built in Fender's factory in Corona, California, is a left-handed model strung right-handed and reversed, with the strap button on the lower horn, so that right-handed players would appear as Jimi did when looking at themselves in the mirror. The guitar, which is available in Olympic White, also boasts a maple neck with a large late-60s-style headstock, classic Schaller "F" tuners and woven strap. The icing on the cake, however, is the pickup configuration--three reverse staggered vintage Stratocaster pickups that are positioned perfectly for boning up on Jimi Hendrix classics such as "Wild Thing," "Purple Haze" or even "The Star Spangled Banner."

Notes: The 1997 Hendrix Tribute Stratocaster introduces a feature that will reappear on both the 1998 Voodoo Stratocaster and the 2000 '68 Reverse Headstock Strat: a relationship between the bridge pickup and the strings that is the reverse of the norm. In the case of the Tribute Strat this relationship is achieved by reverse stringing the instrument with no change to the bridge pickup itself. On the Voodoo and the '68 Reverse Headstock, it is accomplished by a combination of reverse stringing and reversing the angle and pole staggering of the bridge pickup (these two models are otherwise right-handed bodies).

The importance?

This changes (reverses) the traditional relationship between vibrating string and pickup pole. For example, the low E string now vibrates over the pickup pole that otherwise would be below the high E string, and vice versa. It is believed that this reverse relationship produces different tone characteristics - a somewhat brighter bass and warmer treble, a difference that some believe contributed to the "Hendrix tone".

I've owned a Voodoo Strat for a few years now. Well, technically it's the 2001 '68 Reverse Headstock Re-issue, but my serial number is a 1997 serial number (due to the lawsuit the parts sat in a warehouse somewhere for a few years) so I just call it a Voodoo Strat because it's easier and more recognizable. Anyways, lately I've been on the lookout for a Tribute model. I gig my Voodoo strat but I'd like the Tribute to entertain myself with at home.

These strats are all very unique. Great strats, very addicting. You'll want to buy up every one you find on ebay after you get yours.

I am in the process of acquiring one of the '80 Reverse Prototype Stratocasters (The Reissue, NOT the original)

pretty rare find on your strat, man. I see the '97 Tribute go on ebay about once or twice a week. insane prices though. if you want to spend the dough, you can just search "Hendrix Stratocaster" on ebay.

I saw two Tributes go for fairly reasonable prices on eBay here in Australia in the same week about two months ago. It's the only time I've seen them for sale around here... I was considering making a bid or two, but they both went with Buy It Now. Would have been around US $1700 at the time, so they weren't going to hang around long.

LOVE the Reverse Protos, with the front contour. Wouldn't mind having one of those but I'd have to save up for a while.

I was very happy with my find. I got it right before their prices surged on the market too, so I guess I was a lucky one. I'm constantly watching eBay too and having a hard time letting those Tributes bounce on by.

What's even more painful than any of this is when you come across a Monterey Pop Strat.

That's the one with the "reversed" headstock logo (which will look right when viewed in a mirror), right?

Do you know of one that's for sale? How much cash do you have to save up?

A cheaper way to proceed would be to buy a Left-handed Strat and flip the strings around to make it play righty. Of course, that wouldn't give you a collector's item!

Hello, I've had the 1997 white tribute strat which I absolutely love, awesome tone and I always preferred the old school logo and big headstock. It has amazing tone but the upside down tremolo and tone/volume knobs can become a hindrance to me.

Anyway, on to my point. I prefer the 1998 black tribute strat which has a upside down headstock but the rest is down below like a normal strat. I like the black color a little more, the tone is the same, and the gear being at the bottom like normal is also a plus.

Does anyone know where to find one of these? Whenever I look on ebay, reverb, or gbase they only have the white tribute strats and the black seems much harder to find. Does anyone know of any other good auction/gear sites that I can add to my sites that I frequent waiting for the day one appears on the market again? Much thx if anyone can help out :)
