Superb work..! It's like a functional piece of scrimshaw... and I'm glad to hear that Nikininja didn't somehow manage to burn all your instruments as I thought from the title. There'd be enough space to work the word N - I - N - J - A between the string slots, but it looks perfect as it is.

Sure mate. Let me address production snags with my cohort and i'll get on to you.

I've got to machine make the basic L shape of them. Carving/cutting by hand is way too slow. I dont want to charge anyone for hours of work that can be done in minutes.

Email guitar details (neck radius, year, type) to nutsbyninja@googlemail.com

After considering Ceri's eye for detail I took about a week and a half to shape his. Dont worry though, i documented everything including the outline of the top. The next ones wont take anywhere near as long.

Non of this would have come about if he hadnt sparked my imagination and provided me with the initial bit of cow leg. The least i could have done is knocked one up for him.

I must admit, I've been carefully avoiding walking past that particular field. That cow has a very irritated look on its face...

(BTW: still playing around and making comparisons with other guitars. Very interesting...)

Cheers - C

CNN - June 18th 2009

"Fender Musical Instruments Inc. have announced the introduction of a revolutionary technology to alleviate intonation problems. Known as the NPN (Ninja Precision Nut), this futuristic, highly engineered part will change the sound of Fender guitars forever. Fender's Custom Shop's chief Fred Turner commented on the innovation as the most daring and genius modification ever made by Fender since the original design by founder Leo Fender. The inventor (Niki Ninja) was credited with a Master Built Gold Telecaster, with an engraved Ninja headstock and patent rights for life! Expect the Ninja tribute Telecaster to hit the shelves of music shops in a town near you soon"

Seems each new nut is looking better than the one before it. Fine work there Nick! I see a lot of potential for a marketable part in those nuts, best of luck there mate.

Here's something I've been wanting to ask Nick about.

Here's a picture of all_thumbs09's Earvana nut alongside my new Nut-By-Ninja:
Image Image

Now I know from previous threads that the differences between those nuts is well thought through, especially the placement of the e string breaking points relative to those of the other strings. The e strings break behind the others on the Earvana; in front on the Nut-By-Ninja.

But I don't understand the theory of it. Niki, do you feel like explaining to us (in words thickies like me can comprehend) how you come to have designed the front edge of your nut that way, please?

I know in the past you've linked to websites about the science of this - but I can't find those links right now...

Much appreciated - C

Well basicaly all its done is move all frets back by a couple of mil. If you take the B & A strings as the traditional nut break point. Everything else is set off those as they are the highest and lowest tension strings. Tension as well as string height play a great part in intonation. Thats why when you change guage you need to reset intonation. (Idea for people reaching the limit of their saddle adjustment, move up or down a guage on that string e.g 42 to 46 in the low E's case).

The earvana is a very generic nut shape. If you look at monte allums or stephen delpht's nuts both have the A string as their zero compensation point. The low tension of that string stops the core of the string having to stretch so much and sending fretted notes sharp. All i did was balance that point between the B & A strings.
In the case of that tele nut it was modelled on my tele nut set specificaly for those wilkinson saddles. As you know i moved the break point forward on the g string saddle too. I also said in our early conversations that you may beed to file some breakpoints back a tad. If you look at the strats nut its very different. My basic neanderthal shaped one could use some design improvement but should suit all strats.

Sweet! I love customization (especially when it's to a purpose).

I wonder how it would work on true temperament frets. I've seen Vai's guitar and it's ugly... :?
