Strat plus devotee here. I've had the trem-setter in there since I bought it brand new in '89. When I first got he guitar I don't think it was set correctly, so I played around with it a lot. Eventually I got it right, and it's worked very well for me ever since. However, if it ever crapped out on me, I'd just stick a spring in there rather than trying to fix it. I also have a 2001 American Deluxe, and the way the tremolo works on this thing is great - it's very stable, and nice and smooth accross all strings. No trem-setter in there; just three springs. The real difference is in the stability when your using manual vibrato or aggressive string bending. It took a while to get used to, but you learn to compensate.

Good luck.
