Some correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the bridge cover is simpley for looks. It serves absolutely no use...to the best of my knowledge.

Some say it slightly changes the sound, but I can't hear any difference on my CS '54. It does keep your hand off of the bridge so you don't accidently muffle the strings, but I think it's mainly for looks, too. BTW, it makes a dandy ash tray if you smoke!

i'm sure originally, it was for looks. they weren't quite to that nitpicky tone part yet since they were brand new guitar designs.

they might stop you from pushing the bridge out of tune, but it also makes it impossible to palm mute anything effectively, which I do constantly to quiet strings and change the tone.

those covers are more for strummers in that aspect.

I think the fact that you rarely see one still place says how useful they are!

I don't recall seeing any bridge covers on any of the Strats in the store. I know my '09 MIM Strat didn't come with a bridge cover. Did these covers just come with older Strats? :D

Many, many, many years ago, way back in 1967, I asked a Fender Rep what it was chiefly for. He told me that it was designed mostly for cosmetic reasons and to help keep the ugly bridge clean and out of sight. He said, "The more shiny chrome on a guitar, the snazzier it looks".

I've noticed that acoustically, it slightly changes the tonality of the strings to a slight bit more trebly sound as the cover sits on the bridge plate and also picks up the vibration radiating strings. Amplified, I hear absolutely no difference. YMMV

I used to use them routinely for ash trays until they stopped making them. I quickly realized that I could sell them to those players who then had the 'new' mazac saddle bridges. Needless to say, the better the condition of the cover, the more I could sell each for. I think I still have a few buried in one of my parts drawers somewhere.

It is there to prevent you from doing dangerous palm mutes.
