American stratocasters are almost perfect for every kind of music. The sound is about whitch pickups they have - humbucker or single - , playability is awesome. I never tried a gibson, but i can say that the strats are perfect. They have a great feel. Specially the maple ones. The only thing that you can't find in a strat, is the super tremolo. Also the have 22 frets but i think that's not a big deal.

Normally they come with a hardshell case with some accesories in it, but if you're on to highway one models (they're american too), they come with a gig bag.

i agree with ndngary. play it like it is straight out of the case for a while and see what you want to change.....you may change nothing. I set my strat up to fenders specs on this site and i keep it that way. i didnt block the trem but i did add two more springs to make the bridge flush to the body. that way you can still use the trem when you want to, and you wont have a hard time getting it in tune. this makes the trem a lot stiffer.
bottom line...set it up the way you like it.

Congratulations! I love mine, I think it's the best bargain of Fender's high end guitars.

I've had one for 10 years now. It's amazing. The only mod I have is replacing the stock pickups for Vintage Noiseless. To me, this really improved the sound. Great guitar. Outstanding playability and looks great, too.

I took it in to the shop a few months ago to get a full setup done. When I pulled it out of the case under the florescent lights, the guitar sparkled as if it's brand new.

Someone else mentioned how great the value is. Seriously, for $950 - $1000 USD, you won't be able to find another guitar of this quality and value from any other manufacturer.

the only experience with standard strat i have is i tried one out at my local music store, and i actually like it better than the highway one, i find the highway one is rily uncomfortable with its huge frets on a strat, i mean what were they thinking, huge frets on a stratocaster, i can see huge frets on like a jackson but a fender stratocaster, i see like medium sized frets, and the thinner neck(not shape, in like oh what do you call it, across the neck), wow, its hard to play some songs when the neck on the guitar is small, the adjusted everything, about the highway one, i mean i can see the large headstock, im all for the large headstock, but everything else more or less, tehyve made a strat, not as good as it used to be, thats why i prefer the standard over the highway one

My American Standard is a great guitar. I'd recommend it to anyone.

MY #1 is a 50th ann. (the real one) two tone A.M.S.E.
I also owned the deluxe and I gottta tell ya the amse killed it for tone.

I can get real deal tele sounds from the bridge and sweet strat everywhere else (including the Quack!!!!!)

The Hwy series is still the very best buy in the Fender line up, however I personaly would have to have one before the 2006 "upgrade"
I just dont like the monster frets.

:o oh just think about it ...... Whats the need for fat frets...You know
how just a little adjustment on the intonation (U know on the bridge
adjustment ) can make all the differance if its goina play in tune up
the neck ... playin in tune is the most important deed to be done , if
there goina say : That sounds good or how about great !!! so if ya got
a fret thats wide an it wears off dead center , it may not be in tune
when ya cord it..bad news !!! Thiner frets are better ..Got That.!!!
"All stratocasters guitars are great !! I mean the best...Can't beat Um..
Unless they got FAT frets ...The Big Bamboo......guitar bum....

can you imagine the tuning troubles those things are going to have in a few years!!!!
I know they did it for the newby players, making bends easier, however frets wear.
its the scalloped feel without the scalloped look.
