The whole area of pickups is a minefield. Best of luck with it. The only ones i havent heard bad reports of are the dimarzio 'area' series.

Tyrone.

We went down this road before with someone who had put a set of Kinman's in his guitar which seemed to work out very well for him once he had a bad unit replaced.

Then, as I suggested before, there's also the option of one of EMG's prewired rigs.

Thank you. I'll see if I can search that string up...

Were those the Gilmour DG-20 setups you mention above? EMG has a big following as I see many other pup MFG do.

I swapped their 'heavy blues' series into my MIM Buddy Guy several years ago. I thought they did quite well.

I am in the UK and fitted the complete Clapton setup to my '91 MiM standard 18 months ago.
I had a pro luthier rout the body as per the CS Clapton and wired it myself.
All in all it cost @ £150 ($225?). It does sound a little too clean, but compared to standard kit it is a revelation. The only tip I would give is to get everything really well shielded, it was bad until I gave it 3-4 coats of sheilding paint and re-did the grounds.
If you like the feel of your guitar, and don't mind trading "vintage" tone for the extra versatility, do it dude!

I have a 2009 MIM and I really do like the feel of the guitar! The neck is very comfortable and seems very fast. I tried the EC and didn't like the neck at all compared to the MIM Standard. I know they are different neck styles and everyone has their preference and so to me the Standard won out. So as you say based on the guitar I'm playing, I feel that I'll put the $ into this one, though it all seemed so much easier to buy a guitar already set up!! But you guys do this upgrading stuff all the time by what I can see and must be very good at it! Not sure if that's a blessing or a curse!!

Yes...they have several prewired units and you should have a look at their website to see what they are all about and what suits your interests. The descriptions are self-explanatory.

Don't consider it such a weight. I've been in and out of so many guitars in the last decade it can make one's mind spin. Everyone searches for the holy grail. Some are never satisfied, and others more than once.

Fortunately, they are not wives. 8)

Let us know what the final outcome is.

Doc.
