On my '04 American strat I was surprised to see the trem cover sitting on top of the wood (raised). Most other makers seem to rout the back so the cover sits flush. I wonder why Fender doesn't do this? It seems so obvious. Or do they on some models? Not a big deal, just curious....

Extra routing makes it more expensive, is one reason.
It's the way they make them since 1954.

They should think about mounting them flush. I just had a thought...what if the pickguards were mounted flush too? That would be sweet!

But then you wouldn't get to see the different layers. :(

i would hate if the pickguard or bridge was mounted flush, strats are perfect just the way they are IMO.

Is a neat idea though! Would open up a new line for all the guard makers. I prefer the triple layers myself with my zebra. :)
