I'm guessing most of you in the forum have an acoustic or two for those "unplugged" sessions. I have a pretty low end Ovation and want to upgrade and was wondering what your thoughts are. Since everyone here is a strat fan and likes the sound and feel, what brand acoustic could I get that would be a similar feel?

Thanks,
Stratstang

They say that if you like Fender electrics then you should get a Martin Acoustic and if you like Gibson electrics then you get a...Gibson!

I have a top of the line Taylor but prefer Martin. Comparing the best of both companies I think Martin has a better sounding guitar. But, when you consider the $600-$1000 segment Taylor wins there. They definitely build a better middle of the road acoustic.

As the previous post mentioned, strat folks seem to gravitate toward:
More $ = Martin
Less $ = Yamaha

I have a Martin DXM and that only has a $400 price tag. It's a low end Martin, but it's a Martin none the less. I would get a Taylor if I had the money because I like the feel better, but I think we all get stuck in the predicament where we play what we can afford.

Yamaha, Takamine, and Fender might all be some other options to take a look at.

Hello Stratstang,

Right now I own no playable acoustic but fi I had a grand
or more to spend on one, for me it woud be a Martin.

Last monday my 18yr old son went out and got himself a new acoustic,
Washburn D-12SDAOK, zebrawood sides and back with a solid spruce top.
The guitar is a cannon with really nice action, tortoise binding on neck
and body. It looks great and is priced at $350. It came with a gigbag
which I'm gonna replace with a hardshell case for his graduation.
Just suggesting.

Here is a link to where he got it.

Cheers.

Well, if you want your acoustic to feel like your strat, it's not going to happen. Not if you want the acoustic to sound like a good acoustic. Strat-style acoustics are junk, pretty much toys and novelty guitars.

If you want a "real" acoustic, there are a lot of good options, depending on your preferences.

For the money, an Epi Hummingbird is a great guitar. Solid top, nice looking, sounds good, plays well. About $350 or so.

A little more, I might look at a Taylor 100 or 200 series, or a Guild.

Over $1000 or so, I'd look at Taylor, Martin, maybe Gibson, though I'm not a Gibson fan. I have nice Taylor and love it more than any other acoustic I've played. Breedlove makes outstanding high end guitars, their newer Atlas series aren't too bad for the money either.

Whatever you get, make sure you get a SOLID top. If the description doesn't have that golden word "solid", then it's not solid.

Mahogany top
Spruce top
Cedar top

... means nothing unless is says Solid Mahogany top, etc.

Don't get the pretty Ibanez $400 specials that look hot but will fall apart or sound like crap in a year or so.

Godin makes very nice stuff, I like a few of their electrics.

Yari's are awesome.

It just depends on how deep your pockets are.
Personally, I don't like laminates including Martin's HPL (high pressure laminates) which are made in Mexico by the way. Try a bunch. Morgan Monroe makes some nice acoustic guitars so does Parkwood, Taylor and Epiphone also has some nice all wood guitars.

Look for something that's all wood, top, back and sides. They can be had for under 800 bucks. It won't be a Martin, but at least you won't have to worry about it getting stolen. I would get an Epi before I would get a low end Martin.
Check this out.

This thing is really sweet and all solid woods. I tried this out, and I'll probably get one in a month or so.

Alvarez does make a nice guitar, especially the Yari series. I put a deposit down on one a couple of years ago and after about 8 months of waiting I gave up and bought a Taylor.
