I've used a control cleaner called Nutrol from MG Chemicals for years now:

The control will actually be cleaner months later than when first applied. I've never experienced any harm to controls or material (plastics, etc.) from this product.
Simply the best.
By the way: WD40 is a chemical used to repel moisture from wiring and in general prevent corrosion. It was developed originally for rockets. The name itself describes this as Water Displacement - 40th attempt...
