Hi
THe volume knob on my strat makes a scratchy noise in the amp when I rotate it. How do you clean these things? Or do I have to solder in a new pot??

Thanks

I had the same problem. I removed the knobs and I shot a bit of WD-40 in the pot area. It works very well.

Welcome to the Forum.

In my personal opinion WD-40 has no business anywhere near a guitar.

I usually remove the knobs and blow them out with compressed air. Like the stuff you use on a computer keyboard.

A HUGE +2.

A brand such as DeoxIT is what you are looking for. Any electrical store sells the kinda thing...

Contact spray is the best. There are contact sprays with some oil also; what I find where I live are PHILLIPS. The blueish one is with no oil, the red is with oil. I've seen other brands choosing these colors.
Generally, you have to use the one without oil, although there are those who say that you use both! The last touch should not be oil though, as it will attract dust.

Ceri wins it: The best contact spray is DeOxIt. It actually improved the tone of my guitar, and I have recordings that prove it.

Do not buy the Radio Shack (or any generic) alcohol-in-a-can that my main electrical guy refers to ad "yak piss." I have seen him take a piece of second hand outboard that has been abused... noisy, crackly, barely operable, and bring it back to factory spec with nothing but a can of DeOxIt, sprayed on every electrical contact. It doesn't just clean, it resurfaces contacts.

Although even the aforementioned yak secretions would be a better choice than WD-40. Use it and you'll get exactly what you deserve, which is a pot you will eventually get to throw away.

+1 it's not really an electronic contact cleaner it's more of a lubricant.

turn the volume knob fully on and then fully off as series of repeated action
we need not take anything out first
unless the above method does not help
but it usually helps on a Fender guitar
