I've never checked, but it sounds like he just using a tube amp (I'm thinking Super Reverb) and his axe. I'm sure there's compression, delay, OD, some sort of Leslie setup.

Lots of pedals, Big Dipper pickups, JM signature Two Rock amp, lots of expensive masterbuilt strats, his fingers, etc, etc.

Your best bet is a strat with a tube amp and some kind of pedal like a tubescreamer.

John Mayer is one of my favorites. the Big Dipper pickups and rosewood fretboard go a long way. also, i think his Two Rock amps have 4x10 cabinets. and i'm thinking he turns up his amp abd uses little gain and the volume around 8 on his guitar knob. he alo uses his fingers instead of a pick a lot. It seems like his action may be a little on the high side because he gets beautiful singing notes with a mostly clean tone. I've been trying to get that tone since Continuum was released.

I think a lot of it is because of the big dipper pickups. You can find them on ebay if you look.

I know they're pricey, but an EJ strat and a CyberTwin get you there with ease.

I bought a mayer strat a few months ago - obviously, most of JM's "tone" comes from his playing skills - he's damn good - but I'm really pretty amazed at the sound i get out of that guitar. I learned to play "Belief" from continuum (for the most part), and playing it on that guitar my girlfriend literally walked in and thought i was listening to the CD.

I've read where he used this effects processor for some of his recording:
http://www.rogerlinndesign.com/support/faq.shtml

I know he's into the keeley-modded tubescreamer and this katana preamp booster:
http://robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=34

I think the bottom line is the playing is what gets you there, but that guitar really does sound amazing. I've had it for months and i'm still blown away every time I plug it in.

His Dumble amp, no doubt. :?:
