i have a fender classic players and want to relic it if possible. i like the relic job on john mayer's black strat (his main guitar as of lately) and would like to do something similar to mine. i have a 60 classic players strat in a three tone sunburst and it looks awesome! i would hate to mess up the nice finish it has already. if you could post some replies with advice or tips it would be cool.

this is also my first post. so HEY everyone!

lets talk strats-the greatest invention of the last century lol.

Don't relic it, let nature do the job for you. In thirty years you
will have a natural reliced guitar. Otherwise buy a 20 year old
vintage reissue(USA).

My advice is don't do it. If you've got a poly finish it'll be sometime in the next century before it relics on you. Get a thin nitro finish strat and just play and wait.

You play that guitar enough and drag (bring) it with you to every rehearsal, gig, jam session and so on, it'll relic, it has no other choice.
Oh, by the way- WELCOME!!

Yeah, I usually take nasty guitars and make them shine again, not the other way 'round.

I've been relicking my Highway One without trying. Everytime I look at it, there's something else.

I did a relic job on my highway one strat... here is a pic... Image

check out the step by step here... http://stratproject.googlepages.com/highwayonerelicproject

I will say this... the classic player has a poly finish, so no, despite what everyone says, it probably wont relic on its own over even 20 years... the finish is just too thick.

But. on the other hand, doing a self relic job on a poly guitar is much more difficult. I recommend going on ebay to the Stratosphere and picking up a highway one body (Nitro finish) for around $130 bucks and working on that.

My guitars tend to get relic'd the old fashioned way...by playing the snot out of 'em.

I disagree, if you leave the guitar in a closet somewhere...no it won't relic.
You spend time with that thang and bring it with you everywhere, it gets bumped, knocked over, the frets begin to dimple, the fretboard shows wear, your belt buckle starts to wear the back side, etc. No it won't happen over night, but it will happen. It just doesn't happen as fast as some players want it to. Where do you think fender got the idea of Relics, from well played, hard gigging, traveling guitars.

If you want to relic it fast bring it around with you without the case.

I don't really agree. First of all, taking it around without a case just seems irresponsible... think neck cracks, body cracks, small dings are one thing, but big cracks are BAD.

Secondly, you are right that poly will eventually show wear, but it will not look like Blackie or Number 1... which leads me to my third point...

I think Fender got the idea from the guitars that had a thin nitro finish back in the day that reliced very nicely over time. It is simply much different than the way a plastic style finish wears

just my two cents.

many guitars have been carried around without it's case how about Jaco Pastorius' Bass, for instance. Yes you will have to take care so that severe damage doesn't occur. If you ever have seen SRV put Number 1 thru a live work out using the whammy bar while Number 1 skips across the floor of the stage and how he would jump on it during songs like "Third Stone From The Sun" one can understand why that guitar is unique in appearance.
