Im thinking Tex Mex (Bridge), SD SSL-1 (mid) & Fat 50 (neck).
Any feelings?

Craig

1. The TS and the Fat 50 have considerably more midrange than that of the SSL-1 with of course, the TS having the most. So, as you start moving towards the neck, due to the natural properties of the guitar, one might want to consider progressively thinning out the midrange so that by having the SSL-1 in the neck and the Fat 50 in the middle, one would have a crisper tone than if the Fat 50 were in the neck.

2. If one uses positions two and four of the pickup selector switch alot, one would get a superior quack with the SSL-1 there. The only drawback is, if one's stylings are to play in position three of the pickup selector switch alot, the SSL-1 by itself might sound a bit clanky in comparison to positions one and three which would yield a more smoky tonality.

Either way, say one does use the SSL-1 in the neck and wanted the tad more smoky sound the Fat 50 provide, backing off the SSL-1's tone knob a tad would accomplish this. And, if it were in the middle position, backing off the SSL-1's tone knob there would help diminish the clank, thus replicating the Fat 50 here too.

The final analysis, what are the priorities:

1. Stock wiring vs. all pickup possibilities in which case, will any tone pots be sacrificed?
2. Strat quack or Tele snap, which is more important?

I most often play at position 3, also like "Jimmie Vaughan" wiring.
I like your thought about progressive mids. I never thought of that.

Assuming position 3 & "JV" wiring, what would be the tonal possibilities?

tuff question I know

C

Well, it's really not tough. By citing the JV wiring, you've eliminated the 7 combo option and the tone pot for the middle pickup. And since you favor position #3, I'd put the Fat 50s there for two reasons:

1. No tone pot on a pickup will make it sound inherently brighter by itself.
2. No tone pot on the SSL-1 will make it approach brittle territory to some.

If I'm interpreting your statements correctly, if it were me, I'd link the lower tone pot so that it covers position #3 as well and then you'd only have to decide on the priority of the quack issue.

At the risk of being a suck-up, that was a very neat post.

Seems it still pays to glance at the "what pickups" threads once in a while...

Well, thank you!

Actually, what made me read and then answer it was the fact that he already had an interesting combo and a plan, and in my interpretation, wanted to maximize on it. It was surely a long way from the the usual, "I have been playing a total of 30 days and have shred mastered every style of music under the sun while using 38 inexpensive pedals into an equally embarrassing amp with a perceived tube bias imbalance for my signature sound. It is understood that all the kiddies in my neighborhood think I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread (which I surely am) but what I ONLY need to know is, what is the ultimate pickup for me and would I be better off using a maple fretboard and a V shaped pick as I hold my rare, no-name guitar which I professionally refinished at precisely a 44 degree angle while making all sorts of facial contortions for that 'pro' look? You must hurry with your answer because I'm being signed next week."

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all weekend!!

Isn't it the truth, though? How many times have we read such inane, "Literary Diarrhea" like in my fantasy scenario?

Well... I got her all hooked up tonight. Ive played all 3 pups as sets, but never together. I didnt do the JV wiring, mostly cuz I wanted to getter done, the cap is .47 mfd. I will likely repair the wiring tomorrow.
The Tex Mex, Fat 50, SSL-1 is the sweetest combo Ive heard. The only thing I wasnt expecting is the Fat 50 isnt reversed wound. Not a biggy, I have CS 54s on another Strat.

I would like to thank Martian in spades. You made the sound.

Craig

Craig, thank you but give yourself some credit too. You selected a most compatible combo to begin with. Enjoy!!
