I own one. Used it in a cover band for several years. One guitar handled everything I needed. Most useful features for me were Tele and HB settings as well as 12 string. Admittedly in each of those modes, I only found 1 or 2 of the 5 way swith options to have a tone I liked. Yes, the battery issue is what eventually relegated the VG to spare guitar status. I bought it used but it's still an expensive "spare". I find the single coils sound quite good and I mostly play it sans electronics. If it had offered Eb tuning option I'd really have been happy. Still for some odd reason, nobody at Fender "heard" these repeated wishes and the updated version still lacks this tuning option!

I found a couple of cheap options from Fender that fill my needs well enough for now without making me a battery tossing polluter. The Blacktop Strat and the Modern Player Tele. So now I'm playing a 2 pickup Strat and a 3 pickup Tele. LOL. I changed out the Tele pickups, sanded the neck to a nice un-laquered feel, replaced the 5 way, cleaned up the pots and have a very cool guitar for well under $700. The Blacktop is stock but I may change the HB's because they are a little dark. That one cost me under $500. Both are very versatile guitars, look great and don't set you back too far.
