I think tone-wise that it's a subtle difference at best. There is a feel difference when rosewood is new, but as you break it in (especially if you oil it a bit) the feel difference becomes minimal.
I have my own reasons for only going with rosewood, or ebony. It's just a superstition based on two bad experiences. I had a 1987 American Standard, and a 1990 Strat Plus both with Maple boards (which I prefer for looks), - the Standard warped backwards, and the Plus warped frontwards - both beyond the range of the Bi-flex truss rod. I have owned many guitars (including my current Strat Ultra with an ebony board), that were stored in the same conditions (many during the same time period) - first floor closet, in case, humidified house during the winter, air conditioned in the summer, and necks kept at concert pitch. These were the only two that have ever done this. I know that thousands of people have never had this problem, but I did.
So now, I always have a fretboard made of a hardwood - rosewood or ebony. and I've had no problem since. It's probably just a coincidence, but having a harder piece of wood laminated to the neck should make it stronger - although there are seasonal flucuations due to the open pore wood.

I love the warmth & playability of a rosewood neck...then again I love the bright true tone of a maple neck...its all preference I guess. Either way you'll still fall in love with it.

I'm into the vintage strat look. 57 styling, vintage tuners, vintage 7 screw pickguard, 6 point vintage bridge, two tone burst and of course the maple neck which was the only option then.

I like the maple fret boards on all my Fenders. I have a 1988 Eric Clapton with a maple fret board. I have a 1974 bullet truss rod Strat with maple. My 1965 Mustang has a rosewood fret board though. I really don't play the Mustang much. I have a custom built Tele with a cherry wood fret board and jumbo frets on it. The cherry wood and maple feel and sound a lot alike. I do like the rosewood on all my Gibsons. I have one custom built guitar that is made out of black walnut and hard rock maple. The fret board is kinda half maple, and half black walnut. It it a real bright guitar. I had a Gibson RD that had a maple fret board. It just didn't feel right on a Gibson. My feeling is that maple is natural for Fenders.

I prefer rosewood based on the simple fact that's all I really seemed to own. I've played mainly Ibanez since I started playing again in 2001, so there isn't much variety there. So I guess it's kinda stuck with me, actually I prefer the look of rosewood. I've owned 3 guitars with maple fretboards, an '81 Ibanez Blazer, an '06 Ibanez SA260M and I still have my Standard Mex Strat. I had an SA with a rosewood fretboard too, I couldn't hear a difference in tone. Now I just like the look of rosewood, but I think the Surf Green Highway One might have looked good with a maple board.
