Looks like a 84-88 MIA to me.
What makes you think its a fake? The truss surround looks a bit dark but that happens sometimes.

It does look funny to me.

What kind of trem does it have?

I'd want to see more pics ... body, pickguard, etc.

21 frets? Old style string tree ... looks like old style trem too.

I don't know what model that would be, not an American Standard.

well the fact that it as 21 frets, black plastic trussrod holl, makes me think that its a MIM with a counterfit or some kinda self made serial number.

My MIA has the serial number on the back of the head stock not the front.
At the store just down the street all the MIM's have their s/n on the front of the headstock..
Now he claims a 10yr old guitar so could have Fender moved the s/n's from front to back?
Don't know.

I'm not positive that its not American made but if I was in the running to purchase this guitar I would back out or at least ask for a lower price. I'm getting the feeling that it may be a Made in Mexico or elsewhere (not MIA) model. That doesn't mean its a poor quality guitar but it could mean the seller is misrepresenting what he is offering. He does state that he knows little about electric guitars so he may have been fooled as well.

Russ

P.S. The seller doesn't even state that its MIA it only says that on the headstock so who knows whats going on. :?

All looks fine to me. Especialy when you compare it to another one of the same time.
http://www.stratcollector.com/inventoryACTIVE/E810030-teal.html

Notice the tuners, same decal and serial no' layout and identical truss surround. The only thing is the butterfly retainer. That could be year psecific though. Not a worry to my mind

The OP's guitar has 21 frets and a vintage style tuner. It looks very different than the one posted here.

The decal is bang on correct though. The tuners are the same just tarnished on the OP posted guitar. Leads me to believe its not a standard, maybe a precursor to the california series or some obscure run loosely based on a 57/62.

Decals are avaialble all over the internet. Isn't there some way to do a serial number search?

even the serial can be faked right?

i think the best way is to take the neck off to any markings or any of the plates?

If the guy wants a sale it should be no problem for him to do that.

Ive seen quite a few fake decals, non that accurate. Anyone that could apply one that neatly after taking the MIM decal off would make more money refinishing guitars rather than faking them. Its a very accurate fake very neatly applied, if thats what it is. The way the decal faking process works anyone who's ever put their serial no' on a website can unwittingly have their number cloned onto a fake decal.
Given the standard of that decal its possible a unscrupulous authorized dealer has obtained one from FMIC for a repair job.

I too would push for a heel/pocket photo's. I'm not sure that they would show any difference between MIM and MIA though. It they show if it was a genuine fender body and neck.

Curiouser and curiouser.
