I got a Squire Strat with a combo pack when I first became interested in playing a few years ago. While messing around with a friend, my whammy bar snapped and I've never put much effort into removing the remaining bit until now. I've gone at it with surgical clamps (a roach clip) to no avail.

Any advice?

I'm almost sure that if i take it to sam ash they'd remove it with no cost, but if it can be removed without the 40minute drive, that would be great.

Here's a pic of it.

Thanks much

Try a good pair of needle nose Vice Grips. Should be able to grab it. Hemostats just do not have the grip like a good pair of vice grips. There should be enough of the whammy bar there to grab.

Thanks man, I've arranged to borrow my father's when i go into town tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll probably not bother with it anymore... Never used the Whammy much... Just a bit of an eyesore, haha.

Remove the block from the bridge that will give you more of the broken bar to work with. A pair of vice grips should work from there.

Also, if you meet a lot of resistance when you try to back the arm out, put a few drops of light oil in the block to lube the threads.

And if you can't get it out, just buy a new block (or whole new trem system, you can find them real cheap).

You already have to buy a new bar.

Available at your local hardware store, buy once - use for years and years. Cheap too, under $20 for it all.

Definite multi-taskers, I've used these two for at least 15 years. Still got half a bottle left, and the vise-grips have more teeth left than I do :P

You can buy the bits they sell to remove screws with broken heads, they have them at most hardware stores, they just put a threaded hole into the stuck piece, but with the threads going in reverse, then you put the other bit on the drill, screw it into the threaded hole you made, and it screws it right out.

You could try to saw across the top of the bar with a hacksaw. Then use a screwdriver to undo the trembar. You can even saw in a cross head shape.

That said being as though pliers/clamps wont turn it out it sounds like you've crossed the screw thread. If thats the case you will need a new tremblock anyway.

I just did this on a guitar!!! Just remember one thing in addition....Torch it!! No really, apply heat to the block if it is not coming out. I just did this recently, and it worked like a charm.
