Hello everyone,
I have been reading this forum for a while and figured I just needed to join. There is a lot of good info here! I have an 08 Standard Strat. It's actually the second Mexi that I have owned over the years. Both have been great, but th newer one is way better. Since I've had it I have replaced the trem block and arm with a Callaham unit. The extra tone and sustain is better than the Americans I have played.
So here is my question. I'm seriously thinking of swapping out the pups with some Fat 50s. I really like the tone they give. Now, if I install them and decide I want a little more warmth and tone from the neck pickup would a bass-plate be a easy remedy go give it closer to a CS69 sound?

I thought the baseplate lends to more mids and bass??? Could well be wrong about that.
If it does though it wont make the fat50's sound like 69's. 69's tend to be a bit mid scooped arent they?

Pardon my lack of hipness, but what is a bassplate,or baseplate, whatever?? I guess it has to do with pups.

You know that copper coated steel plate that's mounted to the bottom of traditional type Tele pickups? Well, now they make them for Strats. This is what he's talking about. This plate alters the magnetic field of the pickup to where midrange, bass and output are increased.

Rob08, Welcome!

A CS 69 Strat pickup is pretty much void of any midrange and is weaker than a Fat 50. As a matter of fact, the Fat 50 already has a well represented midrange to it. Ironically, putting that plate on the bottom of a CS 69 might just give you the sound and output of a Fat 50. So, if I'm interpreting your requirements correctly, the CS 69 is the last thing you'd want. Rather, a plate on the bottom of a Fat 50 or just a regular Texas Special pickup might very well satisfy your requirements.
