Frankly, I have a shrewd idea I'm just a simple soul and easier to please amp-wise than the big boys... :D

What is your amp of choice?

Oh, that sounds vaguely familiar.

How many knobs are on that amp?

The front of that amp is a Knob festival. I think theres a few lurking round the back too. Its only beaten on the knob stakes by the JVM and mark5 mesa. Their Knob mecca amps.

Multi-channel amps give me vertigo.

But if a guy can handle them without nosebleeds, then the more power to him!

I'm like you, I like to twist the guitar's volume knob and get my different sounds: clean to dirty. Rhythm level to lead level.

I used to like channel switchers my 800 combo is one. Like you i just cant deal with it anymore. The early ones like mine were always a compromise. You got a good sound on one channel and not so good on the other. On that amp i found the high gain channel to be better for clean tones and the clean channel better for gain. The high gain has a really nice treble and middle with next to nothing on the bass side. I suspect thats due to the diode gain circuit. The clean channel when wound up has a very 70's T'rex kind of gain. It only has volume, treble and bass controls that side.

Funny old world amps. :?

Indeed - I like to use my guitar's controls too.

But Niki's right: mine is a TSL 122 three channel Marshall. Must say, that suits me very nicely - no drive pedal ever goes near that amp. Though when four channel amps came along I remember thinking: "well that's just silly. Who could possibly need FOUR channels?"

We discussed the TSL before. If you look at it the way Marshall billed it when it came out it's just three completely seperate amps, each with a mere five knobs. (OK, and a few others...) Minimalist, really. :D

Cheers - C

Okay, I remember now. Do you find that you use all three? Can you get increasing levels of gain out of them?

I do, yes.

I most often find myself on the middle "crunch" channel, and drive it harder or cleaner from the guitar in the conventional manner. Where other people might kick in a drive pedal for a solo I sometimes go to my "lead" channel, which to my ears sounds better than any pedal I've come across.

I use the "clean" channel where I want a clean sound at lead level - which is kind of a different thing to backing off one of the other channels.

With all three channels I use the guitar's volume for more or less oomph.

I got this amp when they were new out and for the first time felt I'd found "my" rig. Still feel that way: not been tempted by any of the developments in amps that have happened since.

Still want a nice small Fender tube amp though, just as an extra toy to mess with...

Cheers - C

Because this thread has been hijacked with Marshall amp talk, let me mention my discovery of a print ad for a new (how new I wonder) amp.

They are using the catch phrase "Soul Design." The amp is called the Marshall Haze ... I gotta visit their web site because the ad doesn't really say too much about it, just that it's all tube and has built in Effects (gasp!).

It's got 9 knobs, seems to have two channels which share EQ and the effects.

The haze is a 20watt head with 2, 1x12 cabs. Another under the radar attempt at making money off JH without involving the estate.

Janey wont be happy

i think most of us geeks here have figured out how to set up the Strat to fit us perfectly by now, so I usually overlook the store setup and look at the neck. a crappy neck (sticky, warped, bad fretwork) is the root of most strat evil today. then i check out resonance using a trick i picked up from an old friend, by plucking the B string while its hanging up and checking to see how much, if at all, the body vibrates.

patience, too...i looked at over 100 strats before i bought the one i ended up with. if it feels right, pick it up!
